One of our Windows 2003 server hangs during ftp.

Hi,

One of our Windows 2003 server hangs, when we get a big file (1.5GB) from a unix server through ftp.

What could be the cause?. Please suggest.

Maybe you have a network problem and when the data transfer is big, it gets stuck or saturated.

Check your speed and duples configuration.

Run ftp from the command line and enable hash, compare the speed of the transfer with other working servers.

Does the whole server hang or just the FTP application ?

If it's the whole server then it could be something like a memory fault. So does it hang with other intensive tasks ?

If its just the FTP application then it may be a limitation of your setup or the FTP client/server. A file of 1.5GB could be seen as an unusually large file. Try a different FTP app.

Are you using a GUI style interface or the included FTP command line ?

Do you have 3.1Gig free on the destination drive? Some graphical ftp apps (like msie) will dump the file into the cache, then copy it to the final destination.

Thanks for all the help.

Looks like the problem is resolved.

The system has 4GB RAM. Also virtual memory was set to 2GB.

I could see that the ftp utility would download the entire 1.5GB file (can see a file named tmp1.tmp on the directory where I used to dowload the file grow up to 1.5GB), but fail to build it after that.

I increased the virtual memory to 6GB and after that ftp was successfull.
