On a Windows 2003 SP1 machine we open perfmon.exe and try to setup some counters for monitoring. But instead of getting the usual Counter names (Processor; Memory; TCP threads, disk utilization, etc) all that we get is a list of random numbers.
We click: Performance Logs & Alerts; Counter Logs; New Log Settings; Name; Add Counters; Use Local Computer Counters; Performance Object.
It is this "Performance Object" drop-down box that lists the random numbers instead of the usual counter names. We haven't seen this on any other server.
Is there a fix? If not, is there a translation table from the number to an English counter name?
Any help/411 would be great. Thanks!

Solution
Curiously, I see such behaviour many times in windows 2000 days, but never meet it on windows 2003.
Try to rebuild performance counters:
