We are planning to use win2k3. We have three sites (A, B and C). The network is private, without Internet access.
Site A have 100 devices, B have 80 devices and C have 30 devices. We thought A and B should be configured as a Domain Controller, A will be primary server and B will be a backup server.
I the beginning I thought we should use following domain name.
A-server1.a.com
B-server1.b.com etc.
Since all device name er unique, and we don't need Internet access, we should perhaps
use following domain name
A-server.a etc.
It's no neeed for .com as a part of the domain name.
My question is: Is it necessary to use public name like .com, .org, .net. as part of the domainname??
I assume it's possible to use private name. Our network is a private network without Internet access. Will Win 2K3 handle it?
Thanks to all

SolutionNo. You don't need it if your network not connected to Internet.
>>A will be primary server and B will be a backup server.
In windows 2003 ActiveDirecory all domain controllers are equals - there are no primary and backup.
>>I the beginning I thought we should use following domain name.
A-server1.a.com
B-server1.b.com etc.
If you have 3 sites connected by WAN link
you may consider to create ONE domain and not three domains, so it will be something like
A-server1.domain.com
B-server1.domain.com

Re: Win2k3 and domain name
Thanks for the answer. I assume that I still can change
A-server1.domain.com to A-server.abcde
if I want (and win2k3, can handle it).
