A shining star in Singapore - Rebecca Ling's career journey with HPE so far!
There is a certain calm assurance around Rebecca when you talk to her. It certainly resonates with her ambitious persona. She wants to venture into the unknown, try new things, and make a unique mark for herself. So far, HPE has proved worthy of what this young star striving for. โ Payal Baloni, Recruitment Marketing Manager APAC Region
Hi! I am Rebecca Ling, and I am currently working as a Pre-Sales Consultant for the APAC Storage business.
When I graduated from Nanyang Technological University back in 2019, after majoring in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, I knew it was definitely an interesting time to be in the tech industry, with the huge digital transformations happening in the world.
I started my humble journey at HPE two and a half years ago, as an Account Support Manager in Singapore Pointnext. Being in the backend role, I was always fascinated to know what transpires within customer-facing roles like those of Presales Consultants, as they get to closely interface with the clients and customize solutions to suit their needs.
On the other hand, I was aware of some of the amazing leaps the HPE Storage team was making. It has been the epicenter for some great innovations in recent years. Everyone now understands the value of data - data is GOLD these days. Knowing, understanding, and having control over their data gives companies the edge they need if they want to innovate and grow. The HPE GreenLake Edge-to-Cloud platform allows companies to do exactly that. And thus, enabling customers to fast-forward their digital transformation with data-first modernization. I knew that joining the team at this time would be a great step for my career.
It was a dream come true when I found out about the role which had the right mix for my aspirations - the option to move internally proved a boon for me and I made a switch to the role of Storage Presales Consultant in the APAC Hybrid IT team.
I am proud to be part of an organization that enables, even encourages, employees to take charge of their careers.
I had to learn things fast and hit the ground running at my new job. But my new team members were always available and helped me to adapt quickly. Currently, I am part of the Communications team in Storage, which allows me to get exposure to everything happening in the space and all kinds of information. That of course comes in handy when I am doing my presales role. Apart from that, I am also part of the Data Protection and Data Management team focusing on our recent acquisition in the ransomware and data protection space, Zerto. It has been an honor to take up the two roles in FY22 and I am extremely grateful to my manager and my mentor for giving me this opportunity to prove myself.
In the brief span of my career so far, a lot has changed in how I perceive myself.
In my early days, I was trusted with the task of preparing and presenting on E-tools, whose baseline technology I knew nothing about. I was subtly guided by my team to research and deliver on the seemingly, at first, overwhelming requirement. It did wonders for my confidence, however, someone who didnโt believe they had the capabilities to manage such tasks. And from there on, I didnโt look back. From simply hoping to do my job well, HPE has helped me realize my potential and strive to achieve bigger, greater feats in my career. From looking up to my helpful mentors and guides, my constant endeavor is now to learn in a way that I can also be a role model for future generations to come.
To support this goal I am also part of a womenโs network called INSPIRE, I work with my fellow volunteers to build a community where women share strengths and experiences with confidence. It is essentially one huge celebration and recognition of womenโs achievements that enrich โLife Inside the Elementโ. The opportunity to know like-minded peers has a real impact. HPEโs mantra of โBeing a force for goodโ has made me associate with its various social and community programs and give back to society. The volunteers are always encouraged to do the right thing and understand why youโre doing it.
Being at HPE also made me take the leap of faith to pursue my other passions.
It taught me the importance of having a wholesome life, and that you can enjoy your life while being committed to your career at the same time.
I used to study Aerospace Engineering back in my Polytechnic days, so I have always had a strong interest in planes and dreamt about flying one. In July 2019, I took up flying lessons in Malaysia. I got to fly a 4-seater Cessna plane and my starting ground was at Johor Bahru, Senai Airport. Saying that it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience would be an understatement. Your perspective towards life changes at 15โ000 feet!
In 2020, just before the pandemic struck, I conquered my lifelong fear of water and started my diving journey by obtaining my diving certification. I almost drowned when I was younger and hence this was nothing short of an emotional roller coaster for me. I have now dived to around 25 meters underwater and was surprised with a spectacular view when a huge stingray swam right next to us!
I have been fortunate to be part of an organization that just doesnโt talk the talk but also walks the walk. We are really made to feel cared for. I hope to continue my so far heartening journey with HPE for many more years to come!
