Building a sound defense: HPE Cloud Bank Storage and HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING
Hereโs the blueprint for building a sound defense for data and applications with HPE Cloud Bank Storage and HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING.
โThe best defense is a good offense." This adage that has been applied to many fields of endeavor, including games and military combat. Sir Alex Ferguson once famously quoted, โAttack wins you games, defense wins you titles.โ And you cannot disagree with that statement coming from the 13-time English Premiership Title winner. Even in sports like cricket, I believe that to survive and succeed as a batsman in test matches, one needs to have impeccable technique and solid defense to bat for long period of time. This week, I am playing off the parallels of having a good defense (aka a data protection strategy) to protect your data and applications.
Building your defense strategy for data and applications
Data is a double-edged sword. It can create a lot of business valueโbut it also represents significant liability. As we speak, your organization is gathering data faster than ever from many different sources. Keeping pace with this unprecedented data growth poses a huge challenge. The bigger challenge lies in securing the data so that it can be effectively utilized without fear of unauthorized access or data loss.
Any breach in data security can severely damage the reputation and performance of your company. Client information, payment data, personal files, bank account details, etc. are some examples of data sets that can be hard to replace and potentially dangerous if it falls into the wrong hands. Data lost due to disasters such as a flood or fire is crushing, but losing it to hackers or a malware infection is catastrophic to any business.
Last year โWannaCryโ virus unleashed one of the worst and most widespread cybersecurity attacks ever seen. The virus rapidly locked up files in more than 200,000 PCs in governments, hospitals and major companies across 150 countries while demanding money (in the form of bitcoins) in return for unlocking encrypted files.
Cloud backup made simple with HPE Cloud Bank Storage
As a part of our commitment to keep your data secure and protected, last week we announced the global availability of HPE Cloud Bank Storage.
Cloud Bank Storage enables HPE StoreOnce customers to leverage low-cost external object storage (on-premises or in the cloud) for long-term retention of backup copies. The solution supports a variety of public and private clouds including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoftยฎ Azure and HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING.
Public cloud services vs. private cloud
Public cloud services are great and have changed the way enterprises look at storing their data, then why donโt we backup everything on the public cloud? Is there a need for a private cloud deployment?
For starters, once you have moved all your data to the public cloud, the cost of uploading, transferring or retrieving the data can be very expensive. Most enterprises need to store their backup data where they can control it and will require flexibility while uploading and restoring the data from the cloud which is not possible with a public cloud service provider. So unless youโve decided to move your whole environment to a public cloudโor you still believe tape is a viable backup alternative for your on-demand distributed enterpriseโyour backup choice is generally a SDS-based private cloud like HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING.
Cloud scale economics = HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING
HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING is a software-defined storage platform that is density-optimized to allow organizations to seamlessly scale to petabytes and beyond in less physical space and without compromising data availability and durability. HPE Apollo 4200 (2U form factor) and 4510 (4U form factor) servers are the foundation for HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING that provides a choice of a platform to meet your requirements.
HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING maintains 100% uptime with 14x 9s of durability through hardware failures, capacity expansions, Software and Hardware upgrades, with minimal intervention. You can save money and time with no downtime during planned and unplanned events and lower ongoing operational expenses by reducing the manpower required to manage petabytes of data.
You can mix and match different configurations and platform models across multiple generations to allow you to select the optimal hardware today and evolve without lock-in or forklift upgrades over time. Lower TCO by eliminating future data migrations and upgrades. And finally, this hardware-independent licensing model eliminates the need to purchase new licenses with each platform refreshโand you can purchase additional licenses only as you grow.
Is Cloud Bank Storage and HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING right for you?
Cloud Bank Storage with HPE Scalable Object Storage is an ideal solution when you are looking for:
- Benefits of object storage without changing your existing backup application environment
- Low cost of object storage for long-term retention of backup data which has to be kept available for regulatory or business requirements
- Cloud-based disaster recovery but without the high costs associated with the transfer of large amounts of data to the cloud
HPE Cloud Bank Storage provides cost effective, scalable cloud storage for HPE StoreOnce Systems. As a result, you can leverage the economics, agility and flexibility of the object storage (On-premises or in the cloud) for long-term retention of backup data for regulatory or governance compliance or disaster recovery. If you want all the benefits of the cloud delivered onsite/on-premises; Cloud Bank Storage and HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING provides that and much more.
As global data processing needs continue to grow and evolve, the need for efficient, effective, secure and scalable data protection solutions is more pressing. With HPE you can be rest assured that data is safe and secureโnot only for now but into the future.
