HPE OEM Windows Server 2012 R2 Licensing for Virtualization
Combining HPE ProLiant Gen9 servers with the advanced virtualization and scalability features of Microsoft® Windows Server® 2012 R2 empowers IT users and provides flexible access to corporate resources while protecting valuable data. Windows Server 2012 R2 is a complete virtualization platform that delivers a fully isolated, multi-tenant environment. When purchasing HPE OEM Windows Server 2012 R2 licenses for virtualization, there are two editions of WS2012 R2 we recommend: Standard edition and Datacenter edition.
These editions are differentiated by virtualization rights only:
- Standard edition is ideal for lightly-virtualized environments. It offers two virtual instances and two CPUs per licenses. Standard additional licenses can be added to licenses more processors or VMs. Standard Additional Licenses include expanded licensing rights: (1) available for purchase after point of sale (APOS) and (2) the ability to reassign the license rights to another server with a WS2012 R2 Base License.
- Datacenter edition is designed for highly virtualized private cloud environments and offers unlimited virtualization and two CPUs per license. Datacenter Additional Licenses can be added to license more processors and must be sold with a ProLiant Server.
- Both editions require the additional purchase of Windows Server 2012 R2 Client Access Licenses (CALs) for every user or device that accesses or uses the server software.
