Re: Windows Server 2022 is here: how to implement it on HPE ProLiant servers

Windows Server 2022, which announced general availability (GA) in September 2021, represents a major advancement for the operating system (OS) that is already trusted by businesses of all sizes to run critical applications. Windows Server 2022 continues its legacy of security while enabling new Hybrid Cloud scenarios and application modernization that helps customers meet evolving business requirements.

Some highlights of the release include:

  • Advanced multilayer security that elevates the security posture of your organization, starting with the OS
  • Hybrid capabilities with the ability to extend your on-premises IT into Microsoft Azure for greater efficiency
  • A flexible application platform that empowers developers and other IT professionals to build and deploy diverse applications

What is the best upgrade path to Windows Server 2022? Just like with Windows Server 2019, the new OS is available in Essentials, Datacenter, and Standard editions. Microsoft also supports direct upgrades from the previous OS, in this case Windows Server 2019, but a fresh installation is always recommended because some of the defaults may differ. In addition, Windows Server 2022 is designed to take advantage of the latest processors, so HPE Gen8 and Gen9 servers are not supported nor certified for Windows Server 2022. HPE recommends its lineup of certified for Windows Server 2022 models of the Gen10 and Gen10 Plus or newer generations.

Do you want to boost your security posture? Windows Server 2022 offers the โ€˜Secured-core OSโ€™ deployment option on select ProLiant, Apollo, and Synergy Gen10 Plus models with Intel Xeon โ€˜Ice Lakeโ€™ or AMD EPYC โ€˜Milanโ€™ processors that have been enabled to support this key set of security features:

  • DL360 Gen10 Plus
  • DL380 Gen10 Plus
  • DL325 Gen10 Plus v2
  • DL385 Gen10 Plus v2
  • DL345 Gen10 Plus
  • DL365 Gen10 Plus
  • Apollo XL220n Gen10 Plus
  • Apollo XL290n Gen10 Plus
  • Apollo XL420 Gen10 Plus
  • XL225n Gen10 Plus
  • XL675d
  • XL645d
  • Synergy SY480 Gen10 Plus

With the new release, the default installation is Server Core, but there is also the option to install a full desktop experience. A new technical paper from HPE engineering provides guidance for both options. It also includes Windows Server 2022 Support Pack information and installation instructions along with a list of currently supported HPE ProLiant servers.

It bothers me big time I can't install Server 2022 onto a very powerful ML350 Gen 9 that I bought a year ago brand new with it loaded for many years of service only to be stuck on Server 2019. Makes me re-think using Windows a few years from now, will likely switch to something Linux based.
