DL380 G5 - CPU upgrade
Hi all,
I have a DL380 G5 that has the low-end CPUs (the 1.86ghz xeons) and would like to know what CPUs it can take. Looking at the manual it has a warning:
Future upgradeable to Xeon® Series 5400/5300 Quad-Core processors (Please contact your regional sales support to determine quad core upgradeability. Some of the earlier shipping models may not support this upgrade). 5100 Dual-Core models are not upgradeable to the 5200 Dual-Core processors.
So how do I determine if I have the earlier system that can't take quad cores?
Any help greatly appreciated,
Rob

Re: DL380 G5 - CPU upgrade
Hi Rob,
Dl380 G5 has two different models of system boards
System board with processor cage and battery, supporting Intel Xeon 50xx and 51xx processors - 407749-001
System board with processor cage and battery, supporting Intel Xeon 50xx, 51xx, 52xx, 53xx and 54xx processors
-436526-001
* you may have to open the chassis and find out the system board part number if you have 436526-001 it will support from 50xx to 54xx processors and if you have 407749-001 it will support only 50xx and 51xx processors
Based on what system board if you have , go through the quick specs to check all supporting processors on this servers here http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12477_na/12477_na.html
PS : If you cant find the spare part number of the server, please post the serial number here I will try and see if I can get something on that , hope this has helped you

Re: DL380 G5 - CPU upgrade
what is the "spare part number" - is that the same as a serial number?

Re: DL380 G5 - CPU upgrade
Spare part number is the spares number of the components on the server, every component has different spare number that ends with -001 , in your server on the system board it will be either 407749-001 or 436526-001, and serial number is 10 digit number printed on the chassis as S/N.

The server is running so I can't open the case. The S/N is USE737N20X (no idea if that is a zero or the letter O" - can that help?

Re: DL380 G5 - CPU upgrade
Rob,
Looks like with the config data it has been configured with 407749-001 ( system board ) and the proc is 5130, this is what I see from configuration data, however it is always recommended to look on the board for confirmation.

Re: DL380 G5 - CPU upgrade
sorry for resuming this old post but I just want to be sure before buy a motherboard replacement. I just bought 2x e5472 3GHz quad xeon processor. just installed and system want boot up. so after searching I found this post and discovered that my motherboard is a 407749-001 so answer is if after two years is there a patch/bios update or something that will solve this for me? I just update my bios with SPP-2013.09 firmware update disk with no results.. so if problem is mainboard..if I will buy an entire mainboard with part number 436526-001 will fix the problem or then VRM modules, sas controller and other parts will be incompatible with the new mainboard?
many thanks

Re: DL380 G5 - CPU upgrade
I don't think there's anything you can do on the older motherboard to make it work with the quad-core CPUs.
You might be able to pick up the upgradeable motherboard on ebay or some other parts website that deals with old servers and parts.
I was lucky when I was checking out our stable of older G5 systems... all of them have the upgradeable board. But then we have the budget to just get new servers anyway... works for me.
Otherwise I think you're limited to the Xeon 5160 or whatever. Those are okay... faster than what you have, but only dual-core. Maybe that would work for your needs.

Re: DL380 G5 - CPU upgrade
thank you for your answer.. I just bought for a redicolous price a working motherboard 436526-001 this for sure will be quadcore capable.. buy I think that problems will still remains cause e5472 is a 1600MHz FSB processor and maybe this motherboard is only 1333MHz capable.. fortunately I have some similar processors but anyone have experience with this mobo running 1600MHz FSB processors? thank you..

Re: DL380 G5 - CPU upgrade
I have similar issue:
http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?type=PROD&SearchText=<add your part number here>
e.g.
http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?type=PROD&SearchText=417453-421
I hope that this is useful even that your post is very old 2014..
