From cafe owner to cybersecurity professional with the HPE Career Reboot Program

Carlos Camarillo was part of the first cohort to complete the HPE Cybersecurity Career Reboot Program.

Carlos Camarillo joined the HPE Global Security Career Reboot Program in early 2022. Carlos grew up in Southern Mexico but was born in Mexico City and now lives and works in Houston, US.

Please tell us about yourself and your career before joining the HPE Career Reboot Program:

While attending Iberoamericana University, I made good friends with an exchange student from the US who invited me to spend the summer in Ohio with his family. After that, I transferred to Heidelberg University in Ohio where I got my BA in Business Administration, and a year later, I started my MBA at the University of Findlay. Soon after, I got an offer of employment to work as a buyer whilst I finished my Masters. After continuing my career in the US, I decided to visit my family and unfortunately, a family emergency occurred whilst I was on my trip, so I decided to stay in Mexico. While I was there, I invested in a coffee shop which I then ran for the next 14 years. The pandemic hit the world and when an opportunity arose, I sold the business and moved back to the US where I joined the HPE team!  I’m happy to be back in Corporate America and working for a world-leading enterprise in technology solutions. 

What inspired you to change careers and choose HPE?

I was in the job market trying to find something that would align with my work experience. Unfortunately, the job openings required more time on the job, and then, my sister contacted me to let me know about the Reboot Program at HPE. She had worked for HPE for the last 4 years and shared her amazing experience with the company and the Cyber Security team. That’s what excited me when I was offered this opportunity of a lifetime. I feel blessed and happy to be here.

Please tell us about your experience in the Program so far:

It was challenging to keep up with all the things we needed to do at first, I felt a little lost. But it was just a matter of getting organized and prioritizing what needed to be done daily. Now that I am working on my project, Global ISMS (Information Security Management System), things have switched to a different level. I am getting trained on the ISO 27001 certification process: from training specifics to implementation and maintaining documents needed for the certification renewal. I am excited because next, I will have the opportunity to work with the Audit department where I have experience from previous jobs. Good things are coming my way!

What have the highlights been of your time at HPE so far?

The way the entire company communicates with different groups through Slack, and SharePoint which are new to me. I realized the magnitude of being part of a global company where many minds come together with the help of these programs. Another highlight has been the availability of training and courses that we can take to continue improving ourselves. The focus on inclusion and diversity are key factors that make this enterprise great, there are many awareness courses that we can take to do our part. I am also working with people not only from all over the US but people from overseas, that’s amazing. I am thankful for evolving technology for making these connections possible.       

What advice would you give to others looking to change careers?

I never thought I was going to be able to make a move like this and it has been wonderful to have this experience and continue learning and developing professionally. If you are seeking a new career that will satisfy you; personally, and professionally, then go for it!
