Introducing HPE Gives Missions: A new tool to turn small actions into big impact
While giving back has always been an important component of Hewlett Packard Enterpriseโs culture, HPE Gives now enables team members to go beyond traditional volunteering and giving with Missions.
The launch of HPE Gives Missions, powered by our partner Benevity, was aligned with Earth Month. Each week during the month of April, a new sustainability related mission was released to promote awareness or suggest ways to alter existing habits to support a more sustainable world. Since the launch, HPE team members have collectively saved the equivalent of 2.5M plastic bags, 70.2M cell phone recharges, 4K plastic water bottles, 504 gallons of water, and 8.2K trees planted through the completions of activities within Missions.
Missions supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to promote action in areas of critical importance for the planet and humanity through gamified and bite-sized activities. As team members continue to participate and complete activities, new Missions will be released to cover additional topics and issue areas. Some Missions will also complement other HPE Gives initiatives, such as HPE Accelerating Impact, to bolster HPEโs culture of giving back.
Each Mission is divided into themed sections comprised of several activities that team members can undertake to educate themselves and others, build new habits, and encourage socially conscious behavior. Following the theme of sustainability, this monthโs missions included: Adopting a Sustainable Lifestyle, Lowering Emissions, Reducing Your Energy Consumption, and Reducing Waste.
Adopting a Sustainable Lifestyle, for instance, is made up of three themes, each of which is comprised of several suggested activities related to the featured topic.
The first theme, titled Champion a Cause and Be a Force for Good, contains four activities to help team members promote sustainability in their communities. These activities are small and manageable, such as โgo to a local sustainability eventโ or โrespond to or share a social media post on the subject of sustainabilityโ.
Under each activity, the HPE Gives site includes an explanation of the suggested task and how accomplishing it can make an impact. This feature helps to raise awareness and promote an understanding of the considerable impact that simple, relatively easy actions can have on the environment. Given that Missions engages people all over the world, it empowers team members to carry out positive change in the communities where they live and work. Through Missions, HPE team members will bring about constructive change everywhere.
Each suggested activity on the site is correlated with a point value. As team members complete activities, they will accumulate points and can view their standing in comparison to other team members. Additionally, users will be able to see the cumulative impact of the HPE community. To maximize the impact of the Missions tool, team members can encourage their sites and teams to accept their Missions and earn points.
HPE team members shared some of their experiences exploring the different missions:
Kieran Munns
โGreat initiative! I've accepted many of the missions and this weekend I started on the 'Grow Opportunity' mission and planted some tomato plants. Looking forward to seeing them grow and harvesting later in the year! #HPEGivesโ
โThe neat thing about this Mission is that it shows your energy savings! I'm just getting started -- can't wait to see how many cell phones could be charged with the energy we all save.โ
By deploying skills, resources, and technology to address the worldโs greatest challenges, HPE Foundation is constantly working to foster a culture of giving. HPE Gives is more than just our global giving and volunteering program, however, it's the spirit of HPE team members coming together, bringing their best selves to work, and showing up for the communities where they live and work. Missions is an exciting addition to the program and another way to accelerate the culture of HPE.
