Step 1: Understand what to expect when taking a practical exam
Before pursuing an HPE Master ASE certification, understand the format of a practical exam that may include the following sections:
- Discrete option multiple choice (DOMC) items: Offer a very different format than regular multiple choice. Instead of presenting all the answer options together at one time, DOMC questions present answer options one at a time, randomly. When an answer option is presented, you need to select either Yes or No to indicate if the option is correct or not. This process repeats until the question concludes.
- DOMC with lab access: These questions apply the DOMC question format to ask a specific question related to the lab environment. You should access the lab environment to discover the answer, then return to the DOMC option and answer yes/no.
- Performance items: Test-takers are asked to perform real-world tasks to demonstrate their proficiency in a live hardware or simulated mock-customer environment.
The exam takes place in a proctored, online setting. You can use two monitors attached to a single computer, along with two cameras. Consistent with past best practices, no additional computers, phones, earbuds, smart watches, or any other operational electronic devices are allowed on the table or within reach of the testing area.
Step 2: Carefully read the exam data card
Exam data cards are web pages that provide a detailed overview of what a learner can expect at different steps of the certification process. Separate data cards on the Certification & Learning site exist for certifications, courses, and exams.
The data cards provide valuable information that helps learners understand what theyโll see on their practical exams, such as:
- A detailed exam description
- Basic exam stats, including length, number of questions, and the score required to pass
- Links to supporting resources, including an updated exam-specific instruction guide along with proctored exam rules
- Free of charge: A series of lab demos for the Advanced HPE Compute, Storage, and Edge-to-Cloud Solutions courses demonstrate the lab exercises present in the course.
- Exam walk-through demos for six different HPE1 and HPE5 exams provide direct insight to the exam, environment, and process, including initial booking, exam day preparation, what to expect in the exam environment, and the final score report.

Step 3: Prepare for your exam with training and/or self-directed materials
