Guest blogger: Shohei Maruyama, Global Cloud Native and Container Practice Lead, HPE Pointnext Services
Many do not know the depth of background, but… HPE has been working on container environments since our PA-RISC Operating System, HPUX, equipped user space separation more than 10 years ago. With the emergence of the standard orchestrator, Kubernetes, the popularity of containers has accelerated, and now we see many customers moving their workloads to containers, leveraging cloud native computing technologies.
Originally, HPE consultants worked with customers with traditional and original use cases of containers such as “devops/devsecops,” “replacement of virtualization,” and “AI/ML.” Now, we also see and work with customers with newly emerging and interesting use cases of containers such as “edge,” mission critical data, “containerized network function (CNF),” and “HPC” among others . It is fair to say our customers are eager to apply containers into many other use cases to make their business transformation more innovative and accelerated. As a result, HPE Pointnext Services consultants contextualize container adoption with assisting customers in their wider digital transformation context.
While we see more use cases and complex workloads adopting containers, there are a multitude of pitfalls within their design, build, and operation. One of those pitfall is the management and operation of the container-based platform along with existing VM/bare-metal based platforms. That is why we provide specific attention to the evolution of VMware Tanzu, because containerized workloads and traditional legacy workloads can now be on the same platform with one consolidated management plane of Tanzu. Other container software solutions such as HPE Ezmeral, Google Anthos, and others, are also working on building and maturing similar capabilities in order to ease operation and management.
With the advent of the easing of operations and management, use cases for containers will certainly expand more, ultimately accelerating the speed of business transformation.
