It is now waaaaaaaay easier to make a complete Docker solution yours, thanks to HPE

The most impressive IT solutions aren’t much use if you can’t easily acquire them and put them to use to drive growth and success for your enterprise. That’s why Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is making a “Containers on Demand” approach a reality … and making it available now. BTW: if you’re going to DockerCon, you’ll find that talking with HPE at the event is a perfect way to learn more about how CoD can deliver results for you.

The way to go
I heard someone say last week that “No one owns IT assets anymore.” That might be an exaggeration, but not much of one. According to industry analysts, IDC:

  • By the end of 2017, 50% of companies will demand a payment model based on usage for major IT and data center investments - IDC FutureScape: Worldwide Enterprise Infrastructure 2016 Predictions, IDC #259813
  • By 2020, 80% of IT infrastructure software and hardware purchasing will be based on OPEX models that include public cloud services, third-party private cloud services, subscription-based on-premises infrastructure software and on-premises hardware provided on a pay-as-you-go basis - IDC FutureScape: Worldwide Datacenter 2017 Predictions, IDC #US41870916

The reasons for the popularity of a consumption-based model are clear:

No Waiting - There are no lengthy procurement cycles for infrastructure - you can provision VMs in minutes, not weeks. You can use additional capacity quickly with a ready-for-use incremental buffer already installed, and your HPE team works with you to actively manage capacity so that you never run out. So, waiting is never, ever an issue.

No worries or rigid capital requirements – You consume capacity with no upfront payments and eliminate the cost of overprovisioning, while aligning costs to actual usage.

Consumption-based pricing, the HPE – Docker way
HPE’s Containers on Demand (CoD) approach is based on HPE Flexible Capacity service and provides HPE hardware such as HPE Synergy, Docker software and integrated support, enabling you to create and operate a containerized infrastructure. It is ideal for companies who want to develop and operate distributed applications anywhere and offers consumption-based IT with costs on par with AWS and Azure public cloud services, which have neither integrated Docker support nor Infrastructure automation coaching. Note that HPE’s CoD can seamlessly integrate with the public cloud services that use Docker.

The Containers on Demand is a solution that follows the usual design pattern of well-known Cloud services architecture where there is a layered set of functions fulfilling the roles of: Demand, Delivery and Supply based on the use of the Containers technology”. The approach uses small, lightweight containers where each container has a single Application and features a microservice orientation that enables design of application architecture with modular components. Commits (incremental changes to the Container images) are cheap and fast. The final result is a solution that:

  • Offers new, efficient ways to develop, test and deploy application services (CI/CD)
  • Delivers full flexibility, scalability and simplicity
  • Features lightweight virtualization, fast provisioning
  • Removes the infrastructure dependencies
  • Aligns IT costs to usage
  • Provides shared Container images for micro services delivery
  • Ensures workload portability across hybrid infrastructure - Compatible with Docker Containers on public and private cloud.FC diagram.jpg

Other HPE services smooth the way

HPE Flexible Capacity is one of the HPE Datacenter Care family of services. One additional option is HPE Datacenter Care - Infrastructure Automation (DC-IA), a service that lets you work closely with HPE experts to access advice, best practices, and coaching to help you enable infrastructure as code and curate tools. We’ll help you review infrastructure automation requirements to architect the best possible automation solution(s) leveraging open source tools. To curate the right tools for you, HPE draws on our ecosystem of relationships and expertise for:

  • Technical enablement and knowledge transfer on customer-acquired tools such as HPE OneView, Chef, Docker, and a whole host of other open source-based tools
  • Advice on tools use, IT automation lifecycle, audit, compliance, and security
  • Best practices and sample code specifically related to projects identified by customer IT teams
  • Optimization review and assessment reports
