Food waste is a costly and growing issue in the United States. According to the USDA, food waste is estimated at 30–40% of the food supply. Food loss occurs for many reasons, such as transportation delays, over-ordering, equipment malfunction, and the discarding of blemished or unwanted products. Restaurants lose $162 billion annually in food waste (which includes the cost of food itself as well as the resources required to produce it). Restaurants may incur additional costs associated with food disposal and risk reputational damage as today’s socially conscious customers choose to dine at restaurants that prioritize sustainability.

A report by Champions 12.3 found that reducing food waste in hospitality and food service sectors by just 20% could save up to $7 billion each year. To make this a reality, businesses are using artificial intelligence (AI) to prevent loss at every stage of the supply chain.

AI solutions can provide the essential tools to convert data into efficiencies to reduce food waste by:

  • Matching supply with customer demand
  • Optimizing stocking practices to avoid overstocking or running out
  • Identifying products to sell before they expire
  • Proactively adjusting production quantities and improving product management
  • Offering incentive programs to reduce potential waste and increase sales

AI brings intelligence right to the edge, where restaurants work to combat food waste. The technology uses cameras and sensors to gain insights into food usage, stock, and customer behaviors and delivers real-time notifications when problems are detected.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise and NVIDIA are collaborating with RadiusAI (RAI) to tackle the issue of food waste. RAI’s comprehensive AI platform was designed specifically to prepare food retailers for a more sustainable future, empowering them to adopt sustainable food practices and boost profits.

RAI offers purpose-built software that delivers insights when and where they are needed most. Patented Viztel AI technology captures real-time information from existing video footage and presents it to key staff members to make swift, data-driven decisions.

RAI computer vision is powered by the exceptional performance and acceleration of HPE and NVIDIA technologies. As an industry leader, HPE delivers innovative AI hardware, software, and services to help retailers evolve. World-class HPE Gen11 systems featuring NVIDIA L40 GPUs are a robust foundation for computer analytics and virtual machines.
