Windows Server 2022 is here—get the highlights

This past September, Microsoft announced the general availability of Windows Server 2022. While the new operating system (OS) keeps many of the same features and functionality known and loved by organizations from small businesses to large enterprises, there are a few new features that Microsoft is touting as the most newsworthy advancements.

Advanced multi-layered security

With security growing in importance for organizations of all sizes, Microsoft has introduced multiple new security enhancements to its already security-focused OS platform. Their Secured-core Server program is built on the three pillars of simplified security, advanced protection, and preventative defense. Microsoft worked with HPE to deliver Secured-core Servers with the assurance HPE has built hardware, firmware, and drivers that satisfy the requirements of Windows Server’s security features to help customers harden the security of critical systems. The Secured Connectivity feature adds another layer to security during transport and includes improvements to hypertext transfer protocol secure (HTTPS), transport layer security (TLS), and SMB Encryption.

Hybrid Cloud capabilities

Many organizations are adopting Hybrid Cloud and multicloud approaches to enable digital transformation. The new release of Windows Server enables them to extend on-premises Windows Server 2022 environments into the Microsoft Azure cloud via Azure Arc, which enables them to manage, secure, and govern Windows Server on-premises, at the edge, or in multicloud environments from a single control plane.

A flexible application platform

With applications at the heart of every business, it’s critical to have an OS that empowers developers and other IT professionals to build and deploy diverse applications. Windows Server 2022 enables customers to take advantage of scalability improvements such as support for 48 TB of memory and 2048 logical cores running on 64 physical sockets for demanding applications,. Customers can also benefit from advancements to Windows containers, including application compatibility and the Windows container experience with Kubernetes.
