Block storage on HPE Alletra Storage MP: Ready for mission-critical workloads
We tested HPE GreenLake for Block Storage on HPE Alletra Storage MP with mission-critical workloads โ and the results are excellent. See for yourself.
โBy Chris Kinzler, WW Solution Product Manager, HPE Storage
It continues to be an exciting time to be working at HPE. Hereโs one good reason: The recent release of the expanded HPE GreenLake for Block Storage now provides mission-critical resiliency at midrange economics with the industryโs first disaggregated, scale-out block storage โ with a 100% data availability guarantee. Itโs the industryโs first product that has mission-critical resiliency and performance at midrange economics and matches the public cloudโs agility.*
How is that possible? Start with cloud agility.
It seems most customers love the idea of cloud agility. At the same time, they are often not putting their mission-critical data in the public cloud. There are a lot of reasons, which I explain here:
The good news is that HPE GreenLake for Block Storage simplifies spinning up your environment. It also features invisible upgrades and built in AI, plus integrated backup and recovery and disaster recovery (DR). This helps make it the most agile way to deploy mission-critical data in a cloud-like agility model.
Now letโs discuss resiliency.
Since I am a database product manager, resiliency is always top of mind when I talk to customers. Not having access to their data creates can greatly impact their company. Not only can they lose revenue but unplanned downtime usually ends up in the press right along with their quarterly earnings. This is not something any company can afford to deal with.
Powered by HPE Alletra Storage MP, HPE GreenLake for Block Storage provides a 100% data availability guarantee. So you no longer have to worry about data outages. Thatโs a tremendous advantage.
How do we do this? Weโve been developing technology for mission-critical workloads for a number of years โ and weโre experts at developing resilient products. I can say one thing: Do not risk your companyโs reputation and revenue by choosing the public cloud or any kind of vendor that does not back their resiliency claims.
Now on to performance.
This is the part Iโm most excited about. Why? Because we actually tested the HPE GreenLake for Block Storage built on HPE Alletra Storage MP in real application environments. (Nothing makes a database person like me happier.)
Letโs start with Oracle. We spun up two environments: one with the HPE Alletra MP storage, and another identical environment with a current industry leading array. We then ran the SLOB tool (Silly Little Oracle Benchmark), the tool thatโs used across Oracle landscape benchmarks. (Funny tool name, right?)
And the results? 98% higher IOPS with data reduced volumes. Additionally, we saw a 185% increase in large block transfer rates, reads for database queries and table scans (OLAP โ and it was 2.25 times faster on database queries.
Why do these numbers matter? Because they provide compelling proof points that HPE Alletra Storage MP can help you run your database with faster reports and more efficient storage access times. This in turn works to sharpen your competitive edge โ with a positive impact on your bottom line.
My mission-critical story would not be complete without testing Microsoft SQL Server and SAP HANA, so we tested those workloads too. And we saw 53% lower run time for MS SQL queries 4x performance density for analytics workloads (OLAP SQL queries). We were certified on the day of launch to run in SAP HANA environments. Whatโs more mission-critical than that?
In a world where data drives business, you demand agility, speed, simplicity, and resilience. I truly believe that there is no a better option than HPE GreenLake for Block Storage.
