New HPE solutions with Scality object storage

HPE just took a major step towards easing the purchase and deployment of object storage solutions with the introduction of HPE servers pre-configured with Scality ARTESCA object storage software. The new packages deliver multiple object storage benefits. These solutions leverage Scality’s software-defined flexibilityHPE Storage-Scalability-BLOG.png and the cost efficiency of industry-standard servers to reduce hardware expenses. Ease of management, massive scalability, immutability, robust security, and automation are also core capabilities.

Ongoing evolution and broad innovation

Object storage originated in the late 1990s, with the first solution-based implementations occurring in the early 2000s. Designed to overcome challenges associated with managing extremely large amounts of unstructured data, object storage represented a novel departure from traditional file storage architectures. Contemporary object storage leverages years of innovation to not only simplify and economize data management across various environments but also fortify data security, making it essential for global enterprises.

Standard features now include native support for the industry-standard S3 object storage protocol, which provides numerous advantages. These include the ability for object storage to be a viable, economical, and highly secure on-premises alternative to public clouds. Features such as S3 Object Lock also add an extra layer of protection against sophisticated threats including ransomware. HPE’s partner for economical immutable object storage is Scality, and HPE offers both Scality ARTESCA and Scality RING.

Object storage adoption isn’t always easy

Despite its maturity, adopting object storage can often be vexing:

  • The minimum capacity requirement for some enterprise-oriented object storage offerings may be greater than what you might need, which can be prohibitive for smaller enterprises or those at the start of their object storage journey. The upfront investment for higher capacities and a robust feature set deters or delays organizations from making a buying decision.
  • Some object storage solutions may not be as cleanly packaged as traditional block and file storage systems. Compatibility issues sometimes occur when trying to integrate with existing IT infrastructure.
  • The deployment and setup processes for business-critical, enterprise-class object storage systems often require specialized knowledge and expertise that many IT teams may lack. Additional training or hiring amplifies costs.
  • Certain object storage systems can be complex to manage and require a different skill set to operate efficiently.

These factors collectively can lead organizations to delay or postpone object storage buying decisions.

Press the easy button with new pre-configured solutions

The introduction of pre-configured HPE servers with Scality ARTESCA object storage software eliminates the hassles and frustrations of the past. We offer five easy-to-order capacity points, all of which boast proven HPE quality and renowned global support:

  • 1-node systems: 55TB, 110TB, 220TB usable
  • 3-node high-availability clusters: 503TB, 1PB usable
  • 3-year or 5-year support terms

The solutions provide immutable storage with S3 object lock support and are ideal for use as backup file stores. There’s no need for expert assistance and time-consuming configuration, sizing, and capacity forecasting analyses. Simply pick your capacity point to get started. If your goal is to grow incrementally while minimizing upfront costs, look no further; the smallest configuration is based on just a single node. If you require hundreds of terabytes or petabyte-scale capacity, simply choose a larger configuration.

Deployment is easy too! The single-node options are small enough for most remote and edge locations. The 3-node clustered systems require only 8U of rack space and include data fabric network switches. When your business demands greater scale, you can immediately and seamlessly add more nodes.

Getting your application workloads connected takes just minutes with the Scality user interface. Let your IT subject matter experts focus on higher-priority issues as there’s no need for deep object storage or Linux expertise. For backup use cases, Scality ARTESCA is also Veeam Ready validated and meets the Veeam criteria for object storage in a 3-2-1-1-0 data protection schema. The UI also includes a Veeam setup assistant to make the process easy and foolproof.

Need to meet uptime SLAs? No problem! The 3-node clusters provide whole-server fault tolerance, which means all your data is always accessible and new data can still be written even if a whole server is off-line. This capability is based on built-in components that are typically not offered or not included as a standard feature in other solutions.

Most organizational data is unstructured and growing rapidly; it’s the lifeblood of your business. Consequently, unstructured data is now a primary target for cyberthreats. You can rest easy with  Scality ARTESCA as it offers end-to-end cyber resiliency.

Additional solution details

  • No configurable components are included in the packaged solutions beyond the choice of 3-year or 5-year support terms.
  • Every packaged solution includes all the hardware and software services required. The 55TB and 100TB packages are based on the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen 11 server. The larger capacity options are based on the HPE Alletra Storage Server 4120.
  • Every system is designed with redundant flash-based metadata drives, fully populated spinning media data storage, redundant power supplies, and compute processing appropriately sized for backup application workloads. This includes 6 networking ports (4 high-speed 10/25 GbE for data, plus 2 low-speed 1GbE ports for an optional, separate, management plane).
  • System expansion is based on the addition of one or more nodes on the same network subnet as your existing node(s). Single-node configurations can grow to 2 or 3 nodes via the addition of any single-node system, in a loosely coupled cluster. Three-node clusters can also grow to 6-node clusters with whole-server fault tolerance.
  • Custom configurations can be designed with your HPE Storage team.
  • Complete system details are available in the HPE QuickSpecs for HPE Solutions with Scality.
