The most recent major incident in the United States was the ransomware attack on the systems of Colonial Pipeline that led the company to shut down their pipeline from Texas to New Jersey, impacting fuel supply in the country.

Cybercriminals lock users out of their own systems, demanding exorbitant payment in bitcoins or gift cards. According to one source, ransom demands in the millions of dollars are not uncommon (Beazley Group, 2020).
