Excel File on Server Crashes Excel

I have upgraded a DELL L667r 98 machine to win2k SP4 Buld 2195 with office 2000 SP3. Whenever I try and open an excel file on our win2k server I get the message EXCEL has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will neeed to restart the program. An error log is being created.

The same excel file opens when it is copied on the C drive.

Browsing or copying files from our file server is also incredibly slow.

The PC has an Intel 82559 Pro 100 Fast Ethernet Lan on Motherboard.

I have run diagnostics on above and all tests have passed. I have uninstalled and reinstalled MS Office plus service packs.

No other PC has a problem with the Excel file (Win 2000, 98SE or XP)

Any ideas?

Jeff:

Have you looked in Event Viewer for messages related to the failure? If there are any, post them here.

One more thing: have you checked your network properties for unneeded protocols (normally, all you need is TCP/IP)?

Re: Excel File on Server Crashes Excel

Roger, Thank you for the reply. I have got the PC working again at full speed and opening the excel file.

I went back to the Microsoft update site where there were several security downloads. Although the descriptions of the security patches referred to issues regarding being attacked by hackers, following installation of the patches everything started to work fine.

I did not down load the security updates originally as I had spent a lot of time downloading SP4 for windows and SP3 for Office (which is supposed to fix bugs with descriptions very close to the symptoms I was experiencing with excel regarding security issues)

PS. I have now checked the event logs and there are no relevant or interesting entries.

As far as uncessesary protocols are concerned I have to leave that to our hired consultant!

Re: Excel File on Server Crashes Excel

Winney, I simply went to Windows update at Microsoft.com. See your browser menu under Tools - Windows Update. It will scan your PC and tell you all the available files you can download to update your pc/upgrade the security. Just get everything!

PC Everything went well for 1 day. This morning Excel is crashing again on the same file/PC that was perfectly ok yesterday! Nothing in the event logs and just the same cryptic Dr Watson error log I attached to my original question.

I don't have anything more to download from Microsoft!

Re: Excel File on Server Crashes Excel

Jeff:

Have you considered the possibility of an environmental problem? Assuming it is a desktop PC with a metal tower case, if you put your hand on the rear of the case near the top, does it feel very warm/hot to the touch? If so, I would power off, open u the case and turn it back on. Then check every fan to make sure they're all running. After that, power the system off and watch each fan spin down. There should be a 'coast-time' for each fan. Any fan that stops abruptly should be considered suspect. Be particularly concerned about the processor fan and the power supply fan. I'm sorry I can't be more specific but I was unable to find the model you described on Dell's website. Dell usually lists their models as Dell Dimension or Dell Poweredge or some other word followed by a string of letters and/or numbers. Anyway, please post it if you can find it.

You may still have a networking problem even if you NIC passes all tests. The best test for wiring is an end-to-end test with a LAN tester. In the absence of such equipment, at least check for improperly terminated horizontal cabling (in the walls) and replace the patch cables affecting this PC with others known to be good.
Try moving the PC to see if it fails using a different drop of horizontal cabling. Try plugging into a different port on the switching hub (or better yet, a different switch). Check the switch to see if it feels excessively hot.

To summarize, software (usually) doesn't fail intermittently. Focus on a hardware problem. Please post details of your activities and the results so we can continue to offer help.

Re: Excel File on Server Crashes Excel

Hello,

My computer is not a desktop its a laptop an Armada M700. Since This question has been put in the resolved category I will post the same question again since the problem seems not to be solved.
Hope we get a permanent solution

Re: Excel File on Server Crashes Excel

Hi, Roger. The DELL is a Dimension L667r. It has been tried in three different locations with different patch cables and has the same problem each time.

I have never noticed the PC to be warm or overheating but I will take special notice of this to see if it is the case.

At the moment the PC has been swapped with a user who does not require much from a PC. The PC that has replaced the DELL in its old locatin has no problems.

I am the only person looking after 15 users/PC's as they break! in-between developing software programs and an interactive web site so I cannot always reply straight away and have to give the DELL time when I can. (IT Staff of 1)

Thanks for all replys so far.

Jeff:

I've only seen 1-2 bad processors in 10+ years but I would suggest (if you have another DELL L667r) that you swap the CPU and all the RAM with another machine. If it doesn't move the 'bug', I would swap the power supply. Finally, I would swap the motherboard. Be alert for loose/oxidized/damaged connections when swapping parts.

Jeff:

This link should get you to the downloads for your Dell system. If your BIOS is not at A14, considering upgrading it.
