Outlook Express

I have posted this message elsewhere with no success, so hopefully someone in this forum can help me. I cannot open Outlook Express because it is asking me for an Identity Login password which I never entered. I looked in my files for the .pwl so I could delete it, but there were none for Outlook. HP has told me I will have to uninstall Outlook and reinstall it in order to get my main idebtity back, but they cannot insure me that my saved mail will be in tact. Does anyone know how I can get into Outlook without the password, or help me find the password. If not, how do I uninstall, then reinstall Outlook. I need this because this is the main mail account for my website, and I am losing customers every day if I can't get the mail they send me.

Re: Outlook Express

To back up your mail just find the files called
archive.pst and outlook.pst you can do this though outlook by going to the file and export - export to a file personal file folder.Wich might not work sice you dont have a password. Or do a search for theese files
and copy then to your desktop. Uninstall and reinstall outlook. Then find the new files (archive and outlook) and just copy back the orginal files. And all of your emails should be there.

Re: Outlook Express

Re: Outlook Express

I think to uninstall outlook express you have to uninstall Internet expoler and that will uninstall outlook express. Because it is all in the same package. The DBX files are what hold your email so with thoose backed up you are good to go.

Re: Outlook Express

And of course to reinstall .. reinstall IE.

Re: Outlook Express

Hey Richard, I went to Add/Remove Programs and found Outlook, but it gives me three options. One to repair Internet Exp. One to remove the uninstall option. And one to remove files. But it says restore to previous settings, so when I go to reinstall, won't it be the same?

Re: Outlook Express

I have attached my read me file for IE.
This section caught my attention:
Uninstalling Outlook Express 5.x
--------------------------------
If you uninstall Outlook Express 5.x and you were previously running
Microsoft Internet Mail and News, you will be able to see only the
messages you received using Internet Mail and News. To view
Outlook Express 5.x messages, you must reinstall Outlook Express 5.x.

If you uninstall Outlook Express 5.x and you were previously
running Outlook Express 4.x, you can view your Outlook Express 5.x
messages in version 4.x by carrying out the following steps:

1. On the File menu in Outlook Express, click Import, and then click Messages.

2. In the list of programs, click Microsoft Outlook Express 5.

3. Follow the instructions on your screen.

Maybe this would help if not do a total uninstall (more info on the read me file) of IE. Redownload the latest version.
Hope you have a fast connection. To get your emails maybe you should try another pop3 type of email so you dont loose any more bussiness.
YOu can read pop3 though hotmail or you could use outlook 2000.
Let me know if this helps.

Re: Outlook Express

Thanks for the info Richard, I have printed this out so I can resd up on it. I will get back with you. I didn't get to assign points for this message, but it has been so helpful. I don't know why it wouldn't allow me to assign points.

Hey by the way - In the Identity Login box there is a remove identity button. Do you know what will happen if I remove my main identity?

Re: Outlook Express

I dont know about the points thing the forum acts funny sometimes. Try again later if it doesnt work ohh well SHHH.. Happends!! But if you remove you identity I am sure it will delete all the files right along with it. So just make sure you have a copy of your dbx files and your emails should be there.
Let me know if you get going.

Richard

Re: Outlook Express

Okay this is like a bad nightmare. I did a complete uninstall and then restart windows, and the same icons show up on my desktop. I have two for internet explorer which I can still open, and one for Outlook Express which when I open it I get the same Identity Login box. ???????????What now??????????????????

Re: Outlook Express

Please reference the following link. I am not sure that you will want to read it, but you should.

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q221/1/57.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=tech&FR=0&qry=password&rnk=20&src=DHCS_MSPSS_tech_SRCH&SPR=OEX

A work around for this problem might be to create a new identy (if you are even to a point within OE that it will let you do that). Configure this identity with the same information that was in your old identity.

Once you do that, you could always try to import your email from the old identity and see what happens.

Re: Outlook Express

I dont understand why you cant uninstall IE.
What if you were to go to microsoft.com and upgrade to the newest IE. and that will update you to the latest OE.

Richard

Re: Outlook Express

Hi Brett, welcome aboard. I made a new identity with the same configuration, but when I went to import, I got the same Identity Login Box. My problem isn't so much saving old mail, but getting new mail from my website, because this is my main identity. I know I have new mail coming in every day that i can't get to.

Hey Richard, I did uninstall and reinstall Int Exp successfully, and although it did move the icon on my desktop, it still has that same old Identity Login Box when I open it. I just have to figure out how to get this out of my puter.

Hey Richard I have given you ten points for hangin in here with me through all this. Thanks buddy.
Maybe I should save all my files to disk except Outlook and run my HP recovery. What do you think?

Re: Outlook Express

This is just an afterthought. Ya know, between the time I uninstalled and the time I reinstalled, I went into Add/Remove and saw that Int Exp was gone, but Outlook Exp was still in the Add/Remove program list. Hmmmm ? Wonder if I should remove that separately, but how would I then reinstall it? Anybody got other ideas.

Re: Outlook Express

If you really want to do that. Sounds like you are at your last resort. Because if you uninstall and reinstall .. and it is still giving you the same thing it sounds like the uninstall is not removing all the files.
So back your stuff up and run the recovery.
And lets see if that gets you going.
Good luck.

Richard

Re: Outlook Express

You deserve these points for remaining faithful to the end on this matter.

I am going to think on this for tonight. If I run recovery, I don't know what will happen. While I was uninstalled I could not get back on here even.
I think I will try to uninstall Outlook Exp since it is separate from Int Exp. on the Add/Remove program list. I may have to uninstall both at the same time in order to get it off my puter.

Thanks buddy for all your help. I will try to get back to you if I don't really mess things up. But I do have an HP warrenty, so all is not lost.

Okay, I have successfully uninstalled Outlook Express. How do I reinstall ? I went to HP recovery disc to do a selective recovery, but do not know where to find Outlook Express in there.

Re: Outlook Express

You should be able to download IE/OE from microsofts website. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/download/ie55sp2.htm and download the whole thing. Outlook Express comes with IE

Re: Outlook Express

Hi Richard and Brett. I tried to send this reply earlier but it did not go through. Yes, I ran a system recovery, which solved my problem in Outlook and my data was safe and sound. My PC, however, did not recognize my software, and it all had to be reinstalled. Including my MSN mailbox, which is where I came into ITRC from, so I had a hard time getting back to you. Then the Forum was all messed up, so I wrote them an e-mail, and they got me back in here I just want to say thank you for all your help, and for sticking it out with me in this mess I was in. From now on, if you find anyone who forgot their password in Outlook Exp. 5.5 tell them the only way out is to run a system recovery.

Thanks again
Christopher
