Equivalent of a N-Class Server

Hi,
we are in the process of laying out our structure for the next year(s). Currently we are running a progress database of a 2-way N-4000 with 4 GB of RAM.
Does anybody have a suggestion, what would be an equivalent in current servers provided by HP ?
Thank you very much,

Bernd

Re: Equivalent of a N-Class Server

rp7410 is basically the new N class - very similar beast:

Re: Equivalent of a N-Class Server

Bernd,

You could easily add some more cpu's and memory, being that the N's (rp7400's) are VERY VERY cheap now. Even HP's reconditioned (used) parts and servers are very cheap!

The N-class (rp7400) can have 8 cpu's and Many GIG's of memory.

Harry,
now that you mention it ... can you put a ballpark figure out for "very very cheap" ?

Thanks,

Bernd,

A5866A 550 Mhz CPU - $6500
A4923A 1024MB DRAM - $1800

Re: Equivalent of a N-Class Server

And the price of a rp7400/rp7410 ?
I found starting prices at 69K, does that sound about right ?
Thanks,

Re: Equivalent of a N-Class Server

New, direct from HP, $69K is probably low end for a 2 CPU box with at least 4GB RAM - more like $75k to $80K.

Re: Equivalent of a N-Class Server

Bernd,

Still ballpark, but maybe a little closer:

rp7400 with - 19,900
2 650MHz CPU - 17,500 each
proc support module - 1835
4 1024MB DRAM - 4500 each
2 18GB internal disk - 1775 ea

That's $69,285 for a pretty basic system and you still have to add on Lan cards, i/o cards, etc.

Good Luck,
Pete

Re: Equivalent of a N-Class Server

Bernd,

Yes VERY CHEAP means I purchased an N-class at the beginning of last year at a sttep discount for 6cpu's and 10GB of memory for 230K, today that same machine goes for about 97K (all us dollars) from HP (remarketed - used).

The CPU's used to cost about 18K!

HP might even have a trade UP program to move from the rp7400 (the old n-class) to the rp7410. But I'd just upgrade the N as is, unless you need the split bus and faster cpu's in the rp7410.

Re: Equivalent of a N-Class Server

Hi just an idea, If the database is big on throughput then the N/rp74xx will do the trick, but as you are only using 2 CPU's why not go for an L or rp54xx with 2 CPU's. When I last looked they savings on the CPUs was
N - $23,000 per CPU
L - $14,000 per CPU

Nearly 1/2 the price and a smaller footprint. The CPU's are identical (apart from a couple of bumps to stop you buying the cheap CPU's & installing them in an expensice chassis).

If you want to be really radical (or dirt cheap)....if the box is really only CPU intensive you could even go to an A class, you will not have much in the way of PCI slots but you can get FC/SCSI stuff for the disks etc...

You can price these out for yourself using the hp URL:

Re: Equivalent of a N-Class Server

Prices have definately went down on the N4000 Hardware. For $27,000 you can get an N Class with (4) 440MHz CPUs, 4GB Memory all with warranty and eligible for support.

Re: Equivalent of a N-Class Server

To price a new 7410 (list price) you can go here and build a configuration:
https://www.e-solutions.hp.com/auth/cgi-bin/welcome.cgi?login=1

I agree with the others. If you are only at 2 processors now, you still have a lot of life left in the N box.
Depending on how old that N is, one consideration may be maintenance costs. A new box comes with warranty service while you will pay more each year as the old system gets older. Your cost of ownership could be lower with a new box. The 7410 also does partitioning so you might be able to get other use out of it. Server consolidation could save you money elsewhere.
