Error Reading IPL

The ignite image was created on 9000/800/L1000 and I am attempting the ignite on a 9000/800/N4000. What could be the cause of this failure to ignite?

Re: ignite L1000 to N4000

Hi James,

this looks like your backup tape is bad and unable to boot.

Any errors during backup?

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: ignite L1000 to N4000

hi,

if you are getting this error when first trying to boot the tape, then it points to the tape not been created succesfully on the L1000

nothing to do with booting onto different hardware.

either that or the tape drive could be at fault?

Andy

Re: ignite L1000 to N4000

There were no errors creating the tape. Also, I created another tape - from new ignite and lif - again no errors creating tape. Tested new tape, but still same result.

FYI: The tapedrive is HP StorageWorks DAT40 with DDS3 tape. When I attach the tapedrive to HP9000/RP4440 I see the LIF with SEA IPL:

By the way, the LIF was made on the L1000 and copied to the RP4440 just to put on tape. Not sure what to do next. Maybe try a different tape drive, a DDS3, if I can find one.

How did you do this?

Re: ignite L1000 to N4000

cd /var/opt/ignite/clients//recovery/latest

make_medialif -f system_cfg -f control_cfg -f archive_cfg -C "2009-08-06,12:20 recovery image" -l /var/tmp/my_lif -a -r "B.11.23"

instl_adm -d -F /var/tmp/my_lif > /var/tmp/cfg

Add these lines to the end of the /var/tmp/cfg file:
control_from_server=FALSE
run_ui=TRUE
env_vars += "INST_ALLOW_WARNINGS=10"

instl_adm -F /var/tmp/my_lif -f /var/tmp/cfg

scp the lif file to the RP4440 with tape drive attached.

dd if=/var/tmp/my_lif of=/dev/rmt/0mn obs=2k

dd if=/mnt/ignite//2009-08-06,12:20 of=/dev/rmt/0mn obs=10k

Re: ignite L1000 to N4000

hi,

I dont understand this bit?

I created another tape - from new ignite and lif

You shouldnt be copying the lif from the server?

Just running the ignite command on vg00 is enough

What was the ignite command you used? after this was done did you then overwrite the tape with some lifcp commands? or ?

Re: ignite L1000 to N4000

hi,

so created on L1000 then onto rp4440 and then back onto N4000?

or is the N4000 proping a door open now?

RP4440's are completely different hardware to the L/N class machines

Andy

Re: ignite L1000 to N4000

Our ignite goes to NFS and to local disk, not tape. There is no tape on the server where the ignite is being made.

To make a tape I NFS mount the ignite image and follow steps shown to get a lif and ignite image on to tape. Since I am just dd files then it makes no difference what server I use to dd them to tape.

Then I move tape drive to N4000 for ignite. Anyway, tape is working because when it is attached to the RP4440 then the lif file on the tape is bootable, but I don't want to ignite the RP, I want to ignite the N4000. The N4000 does not see the lif file. Same tape drive, same tape, so it must be the N4000 not using the DAT40 correctly.

Re: ignite L1000 to N4000

Andy, yes, the L1000 creates the ignite and the lif and they are stored on NFS and local disk. The RP is just used to copy the files to tape, then the external tape drive is moved to the N4000 for attempted ignite.
