I cannot get HPUX 11.0 installed on this server for the life of me. I think there is something wrong with the cell boards. The server has two cell boards and was assembled by HP.
Apparently, there are no hard partitions defined. I have tried the following from the MP console:
*********************************
Tried to go to console mode
*********************************
MP>CO
Gives the Error:
No partitions defined
*******************************
Tried to Turn the cell boards on:
*******************************
MP>CM
MP:CM>PE
Type C
Type 0
Type ON
Type Y
Gives this error for both 0 and 1:
Error attempting to power ON: RtnCodeFailure
********************************************
I tried creating a Genesis partition on the cells.
********************************************
MP>CM
MP:CM>CC
Type G
Type 0
Type Y
Gives this error for both 0 and 1:
Sorry, command failed: RtnCodeIoBayNotAttached
*******************************************
Finally, I tried resetting everything to default.
*******************************************
MP>CM
MP:CM>RU
Reset all the stuff
Is it really this hard to get to the console menu so that I can install HPUX 11.0? This is crazy. I have all of the manuals and they do not lead me to anything. Please help!!!!!!
Thanks,
Brian Whyte

Re: RP 8400 Setup Woes
That dog won't hunt.
ONLY 11.11 is supported on the rp8400 & every other cell-based system for that matter.
Sorry, you just won't be able to load 11.0 on an rp8400. You'll have to load 11.11 - no other choice.

Jeff

Re: RP 8400 Setup Woes
did you turn on the power off the chassis before turning on the cells (pe, then t for cabinet) ?
If yes, check the status of the cabinet with the "ps" command (choose t for cabinet). Another good source of information is the error log and activity log from the time you applied the pe commands.
if you attach it, I could take a look on these files.
Best regards
Stefan

Re: RP 8400 Setup Woes
As Stefan recommended, is the cabinet powered on?
The MP:CM> ps command option t to view the status of the cabinet:
- input power
- Available power(viable for this config)
- status of the BPS' (any warnings).
- status of Blowers (multiple failures)
If this all looks good, verify the MP error log to see if any error codes are being logged when you issue any of the power on commands.
If you find any errors in the log you can attach the log to this request and we will review it.
Regards,
Marc

Re: RP 8400 Setup Woes
The cabinet is powered on.
MP:CM>PE
Type T
Type ON
When I try to power up the cells after the cabinet is powered on, I get the following message:
MP:CM>PE
Type C
Type 0
Type ON
Cell board Power Disabled - Incompatible processors/cell
I will check the logs and post another thread as soon as possible.
Thanks,
Brian Whyte

Re: RP 8400 Setup Woes
Is this an rp8400 or rp8420?
Can you get an output of the MP:CM> sysrev command.
Thanks,
Marc

Re: RP 8400 Setup Woes
This makes it easier to understand.
Whn you look at the MP:CM> sysrev output, look for the line that indicates the PDHC version. If it is not 1.007 or greater then you will have to contact your local HP support office and have them upgrade the Firmware.
LPM PDHC
------- -------
Cell 0 : 1.002 1.007
Cell 1 : 1.002 1.007
This is extracted from the release notes:
- PDHC Programmable Hardware Revision 1.007 contains the following fixes:
* During cell board power up or reset, a cell may intermittently fail to join the partition. One or both of the events "CELL_TYP_MISMATCH_W_SYSFW" and/or
"PDHC_MPON_FAILED" will be logged. The VFP will show "CELL_TYP_MISMATCH_W_SYSFW" or "Unknown" as the cell state. The power to the cell will be displayed as "On" but it will not boot

This output was a pain to get. I had to keep typing the sysrev command. Is there a way to parse the output through some thing like more, cat, or pg? The terminal we have does not allow you to go back through the output.
I.E:
Something like...
MP:CM>sysrev | more
