I feel like this is a dumb question.
We have an 5412Rzl2 J9851A chassis and are currently running a much outdated KB.16.02.0018. (found using show module and show version)
We are looking to update to a later firmware, and I have been looking at the firmware release notes (https://h10145.www1.hpe.com/downloads/SoftwareReleases.aspx?ProductNumber=J9851A&lang=&cc=&prodSeriesId=)
Upon reading the supported products section, I don't see our product number listed....J9851A. I even pulled up the release notes for the version the switch came with and it's still missing.
What IS listed is J9822A. Can anyone comment on why our product number is missing from the supported hardware section?
PS: This switch was purchased prior to the Aruba merge.

SolutionDon't worry you can update to any KB.16.x software version even if your SKU is not listed on the Release Notes.
The answer can be found on the HP 5400R zl2 FAQs:
Why does my HP 5412R zl2 switch have a part number J9851A mentioned on the chassis label? It is not listed in the table above (Ordeable products).
The HP 5412R zl2 switch (J9822A) includes:
- the HP 5400R zl2 Base Chassis (J9851A)
- the HP 5400R zl2 Management Module (J9827A)
- the HP 5412R zl2 Switch Fan Tray (J9832A).
The bundles J9825A, J9826A and JL001A each include the Base Chassis J9851A, the HP 5400R zl2 Management Module (J9827A) and the HP 5412R zl2 Switch Fan Tray (J9832A) in addition to the switch modules mentioned previously. The part number J9851A is not orderable.
So you're just checking the Release Notes against the Base Chassis J9851A SKU and not against the bundle represented by the J9822A SKU...and you correctly will not find the J9851A on the list of SKU that that software supports but, more reasonably, the others SKUs (especially the one that is representing the Management Module).
You can safely move to KB.16.02.0028 (to be conservative) or move to the KB.16.10 software branch (to be more on the "cutting edge" with regards to features) using the latest available KB.16.10.0006 software release.

Re: Firmware Compatibility Issues / Product Number
The Aruba 5400R zl2 Switch Series - Standard Models page can be of help too.
