HPE OneView 9.2 Upgrade Path from 9.1

My HPE OneView (vm appliance) is running on version 9.10.00-0497396.
Two new versions were released in October 2024:
HPE OneView 9.2 (new release October-2024)
HPE OneView 9.10.01 (new release October-2024)
HPE OneView 9.1 (new release August-2024) - (Archived October-2024)

according to HPE OneView 9.2 Release Notes:
Update path: You can update to HPE OneView 9.2 from HPE OneView 9.10.01.

Release_Notes.jpg

according to HPE Software Support Center:
You can update directly to HPE OneView 9.2 from HPE OneView 9.10.01 and HPE OneView 9.10. All prior releases must update to the milestone release to HPE OneView 9.10.01 before updating to HPE OneView 9.2

according to HPE OneView - Product Lifecycle and Additional Resources (https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=emr_na-a00117617en_us)

-> version 9.1 no longer exists

Support_Center_2.jpg

How do I upgrade to version 9.2? Do I have to go to 9.10.01 first, then to 9.2 or can I go directly from 9.1 to 9.2?

Re: Query: HPE OneView 9.2 Upgrade Path from 9.1

@MarioE  I know your post is specific to the vm appliance version of OneView, but I wanted to share how I got from 9.10.00 to 9.20.00 on Composer2 OneView.for those that might find their way to this thread. I believe there is possibly another interim step unique to the case of Composer2 that needs to be accounted for in addition to simply upgrading to the 9..10.01 milestone release. These are the steps I took to successfully upgrade from 9.10.00 to 9.20.00 on six different Synergy environments with Composer2.

Starting from a working Composer2 9.10.00, take a pre-upgrade OneView backup - that should go without saying..

Download and run the latest version (currently v2.8 released 2024_Oct18) of the OneView Upgrade Readiness Checker OVRC filename oneview-update-readiness-checker-2.8-500300-signed.zip against your Composer2 OneView instsance..  This version has a new check per the Enahacements tab ("Added check for the existence of probable communication failure to Composer2 iLO due to iLO deadlock condition or OneView appliance update failure.") to check for exposure to the potential Composer iLo firmware issue described in Customer Advisory a00142318en_us.  Notably, this Advisory states "This issue is resolved by updating to HPE OneView 9.10.01. However, use the pre-update kit first prior to the full update process.."

If your OVRC run output indcates that your Composer2 instance is suceptible to the above, Composer iLo firmware issue (four of my six Composer2 environments were indicated) - download HPE Synergy Composer2 Update file HPE_Synergy_Composer2_Update_Z7550-97855.bin (32.74 MB) which I presume to be the "pre-update kit" mentioned iand linked n the Advisory linked above.  Upload this file to your Composer2 Oneview appliance and install it.  In my experience, this took quite some time to run, on the order of 90+ minutes to full completion.

Take another OneView backup   Re-run the v 2.8 OVRC to check for upgrade readiness; you should no longer get the warning about the Advisory iLo issue.

Download the Composer2 update Z7550-97845 for milestone release 9.10.01 - filename HPE_Synergy_Composer2_9.10.01_Update_Z7550-97845.bin, (Note that if you downloaded this file soon after release like I did, there was a typo in the original file name HPE_Synergy_Composer2_9.10.00_Update_Z7550-97845.bin. (2.12 GB) which has since been corrected).  Upload to your Composer2 and install it.

Take another OneView backup  Re-run the v 2.8 OVRC to check for upgrade readiness.

Download the Composer2 update Z7550-97826 for release 9.20.00 - filename HPE_Synergy_Composer2_9.20.00_Update_Z7550-97826.bin (2.11 GB).  Upload to your Composer2 and install it..

Now take another post-upgrade OneView backup and give yourself some kudos for keeping your OneView instance current - you've earned it.

Re: HPE OneView 9.2 Upgrade Path from 9.1

@MarioE as you are asking about the virtual machine appliance, you can go straight from 9.1 to 9.2.  There is no interim step here needed for the VM appliance.  These .01 versions we released were to address an unfortunate continued regression that prevented successful HPE Synergy Composer2 updates.  We have an updated CA being released very soon that will cover that situation in more detail.

Re: Query: HPE OneView 9.2 Upgrade Path from 9.1

Hello @PatrickLong

Many thanks for your detailed instructions.

I probably won't update Synergy Composer yet, as I updated to version 9.10 last week. I only do the milestone releases for Composer.
9.1 was actually a milestone release, now it is version 9.10.01 the new milestone release (thanks HPE!).

Synergy_Releases.jpg

According to HPE Synergy Upgrade Paths you can upgrade directly from version 9.1 to version 9.2.

However, the HPE OneView 9.2 Release Notes for HPE Synergy say:

Update path
You can update to HPE OneView 9.2 from HPE OneView 9.10.01.

-> I'm confused...

Re: HPE OneView 9.2 Upgrade Path from 9.1

@ChrisLynchI opened a case for the virtual machine appliance today and HPE support told me that I have to make the intermediate step from 9.1 to 9.10.01 to 9.2...

Apparently the Composer2 is not clearly defined either. Do I also have to open a case here? Or are the documents adapted so that they are uniform and the content is correct?

Re: HPE OneView 9.2 Upgrade Path from 9.1

Hi @MarioE, thank you for bringing this to our attention!  We will get the documentation updated to include 9.10.  It is fully supported to update from 9.10 to 9.20.  In the Synergy case, the update for 9.10.01 was specifically to bundle a new version of iLO.  Like Patrick states, it is always wise to run the Upgrade Readiness Checker (URC) prior to any updates!

For Synergy, an updated iLO was delivered in 9.10 and then again in 9.10.01.  Since the version bundled in OV 9.10 didn't solve all the cases, we chose to archive the 9.10 release in favor of 9.10.01.  I believe that's where the confusion is happening - we'll work to get support on the same page too.

Re: HPE OneView 9.2 Upgrade Path from 9.1

Hello @Darrin Rawls

Thanks for the information.
The confusion arises because the documentation is different in the Release Notes, Software Support Center or Advisory. Then we have HPE support, which also doesn't know how to do it correctly, but simply claims something.
I run the Upgrade Readiness Checker before every update, whether on the Virtual Machine Appliance or Synergy Composer.

The upgrade path is summarized as follows:
- Virtual Machine Appliance: Upgrade from 9.1 to 9.2
- Synergy Composer2: Upgrade from 9.1 to 9.10.01 to 9.2

Is this correct?

Re: HPE OneView 9.2 Upgrade Path from 9.1

@MarioE Correct for VM Appliance.  For Synergy, the same version of iLO is bundled in 9.10.01 and 9.20, so upgrading directly from 9.10 to 9.20 will be fully supported too (same iLO upgrade experience as if you went from 9.10 to 9.10.01 to 9.20).
