How do I create a backup policy to run last day of year and retain for seven years

Hi Everyone,

Maybe I'm just an idiot, but I can't seem to figure out how to create a backup  a last day of the year backup that I retain for 7 years.

When I try I can't seem to match up the frequency and backup days to match what I need.

Hi Randolfini

To create an HPE SimpliVity backup for a last day of the year backup that you retain for 7 years, you can follow these general steps:

1. Create a new backup policy: In the HPE SimpliVity GUI, navigate to the "Backup Policies" tab and click "New". Give the policy a name, and then specify the backup frequency as "Yearly" and the backup day as "December 31st".
2. Configure retention settings: In the backup policy settings, configure the retention settings to retain the backup for 7 years. Set the "Keep" setting to "7" and the "Keep Unit" setting to "Years".
3. Assign the policy: After configuring the backup policy settings, assign the policy to the desired VMs or VM folders in the "Backup" tab.

Note: HPE SimpliVity backups are incremental, so each backup only captures changes since the last backup. This means that the first backup created with this new policy will only include changes since the previous backup, so it may not be a full backup. However, subsequent backups will be full backups for that year.

If you are having difficulty matching up the frequency and backup days to match your requirements, you may need to adjust the backup policy settings or consider creating multiple backup policies with different settings to achieve the desired backup frequency and retention period. It is recommended to consult with your HPE support team or qualified IT personnel for assistance with configuring the backup policies to meet your specific requirements.

HI Mahesh,

In the GUI I don't have Yearly as a frequency option. I am running 4.1.3

@Randolfini

There is no option for a yearly backup when creating backup policies. Just to clarify some other point regarding the backup, a virtual machine backup in Simplivity represents the contents of a virtual machine at the point in time the backup is created. Since you can't specify a yearly frequency you may need to manually back the VM up and set a retention period of that backup as desired (in years).

@gustenar

Thanks for your reply gustenar.

How can I make a feature request for a yearly option?

I only need to retain yearly backups for seven years, not monthly backups. Having to manually create a yearly point across many VMs isn't really an option. I suppose I could use the Powershell module, GitHub - atkinsroy/HPESimpliVity: PowerShell Module for managing HPE SimpliVity objects via the REST API., to automate the backup run.

Thanks
