Query: Maximum VMDK disk size

Maximum VMDK disk size

We have some quite large file servers in our organization.  I know VMware supports vmdk's up to 62TB in size and we are no where near that.  Does anyone know if Simplivity storage supports vmdk's up to this size or is it a smaller size?  Also I know it's dependent on how much storage we have available total on our nodes.

Re: Maximum VMDK disk size

It has been observed that after upgrading Vmware to ESXi 7 build 16850804 and above, there may be a change in the datastore parameters presented to the vCenter.

The maximum virtual disk size would report as 2TB on the vCenter instead of 62TB which is the maximum supported size for NFSv3.

The issue is observed on the vCenter and this prevents adding disks of greater than 2TB and migrating VMs greater than 2TB to the affected datastore.

Logging in directly to the host will allow for creation of VM's  or adding disks higher than 2TB.

Error observed during vMotion: File [DatastoreName] VMname/VMname.vmdk is larger than the maximum size supported by datastore DatastoreName

Resolution

Restarting the hostd service would fix the issue and the maximum virtual disk size will report 62TB as expected.

Resolution :

    1. Enable SSH on the ESXi host.

    1. Login as root and restart the hostd services : /etc/init.d/hostd restart

    1. Allow the host to re-connect to the vCenter and verify the datastore parameters.

Please confirm if any further questions.
