HPE P2000 G3 Resetting Failed Hard Drive Status for a test

I have an HPE P2000 G3 and I have had a 3 hard drives fail in the last 6 months when doing a vscrub. In my setup I have a number of vidsks all Raid 1 together. I have replaced the drives with brand new ones, I have swapped drives around, and replaced the mounts. I have come to the realization that every drive has failed in slot 3.

So I want to conduct a test. I want to move that vdisk to another slot in the enclosure and restart the vdisk scrub. How do I reset the status of a FAILED drive to show as good again?

Hi,

Drives once failed can be in 2 state - Leftover and faulty.

In some rare scenarios faulty drive disappears from SMU.

You could clear the metadata of a drive if its in left over state.

A drive in faulty state cannot be brought online from MSA end.

You could try to remove the hard drive and install it in a different free slot to check whether it comes back to left over state.

Please ensure that movement of disks which are part of vdisk is performed only when the controllers are shut down and array powered off.

If all drives fail in slot 3 and same drives work in different slot, it could be due to faulty back plane slot.

P2000 G3 is an EOSL product.

You should consider upgrading to newer model storage.

"You could try to remove the hard drive and install it in a different free slot to check whether it comes back to left over state."

Thats what I wanted to try but the HDD status follows the HDD serial. So even if I move it to another slot the HDD serial just shows in failed state. I was trying to figure out how to clear the HDD serial state so I could move it and test if it was the backplane slot.

This is for my home setup and I wish I could afford a newer model.

@rbriggs1
Unfortunately you can not recover a FAILED drive into the same MSA.  The FAILED drive serial number is saved in metadata and therefore known to be a 'bad actor' anytime it is installed.
A data destructive test you could try is deleting the disk-group/vdisk.  That may wipe the correct metadata and have the system forget about the failed drive serial number.
This test is DATA DESTRUCTIVE, you will lose all data on a VDISK that you delete.  Please use caution.  And it might not work.

If you have another MSA the drive will work there unless it is a real faulty drive.

Just to re-iterate, deleting a vdisk is DATA DESTRUCTIVE and all data will be lost.  Please use wise judgement as to how to proceed.
