Re: MSA 2040 controller
Hello@jorge_mat0207 ,
Please check the controller's compatibility, the new controller should be similar to the existing controller.
The controller firmware version and configuration should be the same as the existing controller.
We have to take the downtime of the storage to install a new controller.
To avoid data loss, back up your data before adding a new controller to a storage array.
Hope this helps!
Regards,
Venkat

Re: MSA 2040 controller
Thanks @venkat_y
The idea is that the second controller is a backup or copy of the first in case of failure, which starts operating immediately. I understand that the explanation you mention would be the most convenient way or not?

Re: MSA 2040 controller
I explain the query:

The idea is that the second controller is a backup or copy of the first in case of failure, which starts operating immediately.
What would be the procedure for this, and if it can be done hot or by turning off the storage?

SolutionHi,
Please check whether the current MSA 2040 controller firmware version is GL225P002.
This is the latest version available.
If the unit is under extended warranty, and you have access to firmware upgrade file, update the firmware of current controller to the latest version before installing new controller.
Ensure that single controller mode is enabled on the MSA before upgrading firmware.
The below command could be used to check current status:
show advanced-settings
show versions
The new controller might come with older version firmware.
I would suggest scheduling a downtime and having a data back up before adding new controller.
Disable partner firmware update option before installing new controller.
Install the new controller (leave PFU disabled), allow 5-7 minutes for new controller to initialize.
Verify the vdisk/disk group/Pool status once new controller initialization gets completed.
If the firmware version of old and new controllers matches enable PFU.
If the firmware version of old and new controllers does not differ by more than 2 versions enable PFU and allow around 30 minutes for firmware synchronization to get completed.
If the firmware version is too old update the firmware manually using firmware update exe file.
You would need to check the volume mapping and make changes to ensure that volumes are mapped through host ports of both controllers.
You might face issues after installing new controller.
I would suggest logging an HPE support case to receive assistance in case you come across any issues.
