SixSq revolutionizes the relationship between cities and citizens with HPE OEM Solutions
If you’re a driver, you’ve likely encountered black rubber tubes rolled out across intersections for vehicles to pass over. Connected to a box on the side of the road, these devices gather and hold data on how many vehicles are passing through a road at any given time.
While these tubes can provide city planners with a multitude of important data points that they need for critical studies, SixSq has found a smarter, more efficient way to collect and manage this type of data. “By recording in real-time and creating actionable metrics that can be relied upon, manual studies are not required anymore,” remarks Marc-Elian Bégin, SixSq CEO and co-founder. This time saving often creates a return on investment within one year via reduced workforce alone.
With its technology, sensors embedded in traffic lights can provide the same data in real-time. This is just one application available in the marketplace of business apps that SixSq created to deliver IoT solutions that are helping to create smarter, leaner cities.
Paving the way for smarter transit systems:
SixSq smart city offerings are found in Florence’s transit system, where a range of sensors are used in trams, tram stops, and terminals to detect current traffic levels inside and outside trams, along with any obstacles along the route.
This information assists both drivers and passengers, ensures a reliable transit system, and mitigates the risk of accidents. Predictive maintenance is also easier and safer with SixSq solution, as noise and vibration levels provide engineers with the information they need without requiring them to enter the tram for a physical inspection.
All these inputs are combined in data fusion, which is what makes SixSq management platform unique. “By using data collected from multiple inputs,” Bégin states, “customers can gain a more complete picture of what’s going on in real time, allowing businesses and institutions to be more proactive regarding what’s happening throughout their cities.”
A shared vision:
SixSq software enables its customers to deploy smart applications anywhere—from multimedia hubs in tram stations to a cloud running Big Data analytics. However, to deliver a complete solution, SixSq also needed the right hardware to align with its software approach, along with a partner that could extend the reach of this small, Geneva-based company to the rest of the world.
“Reach is the key element,” says Bégin. “We are regularly informed that customers want to talk to us through the HPE sales network, which is awesome. It’s like inbound marketing within the HPE network, which is very valuable for us.” The HPE OEM program ideally meets SixSq’s needs on both counts with long-life HPE Edgeline systems, including 5-year extended warranties, as well as global go-to-market support.
SixSq smart city and smart science solutions are built on the HPE Edgeline portfolio through the HPE OEM program. Edge-to-cloud technology enables customers to use real-time data for automating things such as streetlight intensity at the edge and transforming aggregate IoT data into actionable insights in the cloud.
Bégin states, “The HPE OEM program enabled us to certify our software on the entire Edgeline portfolio and beyond in a smooth process, so we can supply the full range of our customers’ deployment needs with a single partner. Being able to leverage the massive exposure of HPE is a big part of bringing our solutions to market, not only from a technology standpoint but also for marketing and warranty service”.
