alias

how do i set an alias that will be permanent. i can set the alias for the ongoing session, but doesn't keep when i logout. how do i go about setting an alias? it's for HP_UX 11.0 9000 box. i created the user and would like to create the alias.

Put the alias in your .profile. Hope this helps!

Hi,
if you want to keep an alias you will need to define it in a login script :
$HOME/.profile, $HOME/.login, /etc/profile, ...

All unix flavours are exactly the same . . . . . . . . . . for end users anyway.

I just edited the .cshrc in the users $HOME
and that seems to have done it.

I would add one consideration:
alias command works fine in .profile, but when a customer begins a VUE,CDE session via XDMCP, even though the alias has been set, the hpterm started from the control panel does not recognize it.
to solve this :
in $HOME/.profile add the following environment variable:
export ENV=$HOME/.kshrc

create the $HOME/.kshrc and set the alias in it.
This way the aliases will remain set even though you change the shell because the .kshrc will be read whenever the shell changes.
