Backup

Is there any way to find which utility is used for backup
(ie dd,cpio, fbackup or tar) by reading the tape.

Thanks in advance

Re: Backup

hmmm, dunno ... there might be a free/shareware utility available but the way to go might just be trial & error.
try tar tvf ...
try fbackup -I /tmp/idx -f ...
etc...

Thierry.

Re: Backup

If you have omniback, you can scan the media..I think it tells the difference between CPIO and TAR.
I may be slow, but I get there !

Re: Backup

Hi,

Each utility has its own archive format, so your chance is to try each one with verify flags to recognize what format it is.
cpio -ivt < device
tar -tvf device
fbackup ??(man 1M fbackup)

Fortunately Omniback is able to determine if a media is cpio, tar, fbackup or Omniback formats when doing a simple media scan.

About dd you never know, it can read any kind of archive on media. You can write any kind of archive to the media using dd either(cpio, tar, etc).

Cheers,

Re: Backup

Thanks to you all,
I conclude, In HP-UX it is not possible to recognise backup type by using single command.(I think it is
possible in SCO-UX ,command "dtype")
