Can I share a DAT between 2 Partitions?

Hello,
I have to create two partitions in a rp7410. It has just one DAT device and one DVD device.

My question is: after I'll have done the two partitions, will I be able to access to the DVD and DAT devices from any of the partitions or not?

If they are external, you can unplug them from their SCSI card on one partition and plug them into the SCSI card on the other partition. If they're internal - no.

I'm sorry to read that.

Thanks Pete.

Re: Can I share a DAT between 2 Partitions?

Go to Ebay.
Search for SCSI to Fibre Channel devices to wit:

-- SCSI to FC data router (or bridge)
-- FC HBA's for your rp7410
-- a FC switch

And you should be able to share your DAT or any SCSI device efectively between your partitions.

OR

You can buy a SCSI switch/director -- something similar to the old Printer A-B switch.

Well, if you're going to E-Bay, it might be easier to just by another DAT and CD drive for your second partition!

That's right Pete.. a simpler and an even better suggestion from the guy with the Laurel leaves....

Actually we faced a similar situation when I implemented a virtual paritioning scheme (not HPUX although we're now active with vPars) -- the SAN solution (as I am suggesting) was the most cost effective with the current affordability of virtaull most FC devices... You can float any SCSI device around your SAN connected servers...

I can see where that would work very well in certain situations, but in this case, there's already an internal drive. It makes sense to just add another!

Or leave the tapedevice and CDROM on one partition and use it over the network between the two partitions using rmt and NFS.

A nastier way would be to put the two SCSI controllers in one chain but on different SCSI-ID's, but I don't think this is supported by HP and can give nasty results if both partitions try to access the devices simultaneously.
Every problem has at least one solution. Only some solutions are harder to find.
