Can't boot into HP-UX v3

Looks like I'm getting a recursive crash at boot. I don't have media at the moment and need to get my test environment backup and running.
I tried:
HPUX>boot /stand/backup/vmunix -is

and it hangs after a minute or so of disk activity.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: Can't boot into HP-UX v3

Looks like a RISC system. Model? Did it work before? Any MP logs?

Hope this helps!

Re: Can't boot into HP-UX v3

Hi,

RISC has GSP - right?
1. GSP logs?
2. Tried booting from Alt path?

Boot from an alternate path and then analyze the cause for the error.

rx2660

I was in the process of changing lan0 ip address when the server froze. I powered it to recover and it's in a recursive loop now. Booting to backup goes nowhere.

Re: Can't boot into HP-UX v3

I hooked up a console port and the server is actually booting and I can log into through console login. The desktop login on the other hand, loops from the HP logo screen to a gray screen with cursor. How do I recover this?
Thanks

This was the root cause of the mess. Unless you are connecting through another LAN card, then changing the IP address guarantees complete loss of connectivity and it will stay that way until you fix the networking.

Making things worse is that it sounds like you are using Xwindows rather than ssh or telnet. Xwindows is critically dependent on proper networking and the desktop will never come up until you fix all the networking issues.

Stay away from Xwindows and use the 'real' console to get the IP, subnet mask, routing and hosts/DNS fixed. Use ping and ssh or telnet from another system to verify your fixes. Once everything is working, you can try to display xclock on your Xwindow device (ie, Linux or PC with X emulator) and then finally get the desktop working.

Re: Can't boot into HP-UX v3

you need to gt th panic string
so booying with a serial link can help you to get the error.

Re: Can't boot into HP-UX v3

I was able to sort this out through console port yesterday afternoon. I'm having a hard time understanding why I need network connectivity in order to manager my server "locally".

Thanks for all of the responses

Re: Can't boot into HP-UX v3

*You* don't need network connectivity, but XWindows need it ...

Hope this helps!
