Can't see SCSI devices

K580
4GB DDS C2478SZ tape drive

I had a bad tape drive. It was replaced and now I do not have access to either my tape drive or CD rom. If I do an ioscan the only devices I see on the SCSI device are:

ext_bus 1 10/12/5 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE Built-in SCSI
target 5 10/12/5.7 tgt CLAIMED DEVICE
ctl 1 10/12/5.7.0 sctl CLAIMED DEVICE Initiator
/dev/rscsi/c1t7d0

The tape drive should be 10/12/5.0.0 and the
cd should be 10/12/5.2.0
I have also taken a good drive out of another machine and tried it with the same results.
What should I try to replace next? The cables? Did I miss something?

It sounds like a cable has come loose, is this on a k class ?

Re: Can't see SCSI devices

Hi John,

This may be a SCSI id conflict. Try connecting one device at a time and see whether it detects. If it detects, then check the SCSI id of CD and Tape drive and set it properly.

You can also check the cables, connectors and terminators.

Re: Can't see SCSI devices

Assuming your tape drive and CDROM SCSI address do not clash , try recreating the device files ..

# cd /
# insf -e
# ioscan -fn

Re: Can't see SCSI devices

If your CD-ROM was definetly good before you replaced the tape and now you can not see either, the problem is usually non-unique SCSI IDs. You should physically verify each device has a unique SCSI ID. Verify each ribbon cable is securely attached as well.

Good Luck.

Re: Can't see SCSI devices

Did hp replace it or did you? If it was hp, get them back out there.

If you did, well...

K boxes are a pain to work on, and since this is the internal bus a cable will not be easy to change. I would just check to see if the cd and tape are connected properly, no pins are bent, etc..., then try with each one plugged in without the other.

Hopefully it is an easy solution.

I missed the K580 bit on your question, what is wrong most likly is that the scsi cable has been pulled from the board - reseat it and as already mentioned chech scsi id of new drive is the same as old.

Re: Can't see SCSI devices

A long story short. I work for the goverment. Lowest bid for hardware maintenance. Technician came back out today and when he was done my machine was in a panic dump. I had him leave. First problem was he had the SCSI cable hooked up wrong. I corrected, booted up and could see both devices claimed on the ioscan. Still can't read or write to drive. Swapped out a known good drive from another "K" machine. Works fine. Does anybody know if there are any patches for 'newer' model dds3 drives. This is an HP, but the part number is different than the one that works
I will do all my hardware maintenance myself from now on!!!!
