Cannot connect to serial port terminal

I'm trying to connect to a serial terminal from my HP-UX 11.20 system. I've got a serial cable from the serial port of my 11.20 system going to the terminal (which itself is an i2000 computer which is sending the console out to it's serial port) but the cu command doesn't connect. I get the following:

# cu -s 11500 -l/dev/tty0p0 -h -q -e -d dir
call dial(11500)
baud=11500, speed=11500, line=(null), telno=(null)
call find_dev(17777773340)
baud=11500, speed=11500, line=(null), telno=(null)
Connect failed: Requested device/system name not known

I've connected a palmtop to the i2000 serial port which is sending it's console to the serial port. I can see all the console output on my palmtop so I know the i2000 is sending good data out the serial port. I just cannot seem to be able to see this data from my 11.20 system running cu.

Re: Cannot connect to serial port terminal

Have you got "Direct tty0p0 - 11500 direct" line in /etc/uucp/Devices file ?

1) If not add that line and try again.

Re: Cannot connect to serial port terminal

Tim,
Do you have an "Access Port" serial connection?
You will want to use that connection instead of a regular serial port. Look for Document ID KBRC00005801, the information about configuring a modem will be helpful to you in this scenario as well.

Hope this helps.

Re: Cannot connect to serial port terminal

Editing /etc/uucp/Devices gets me 1/2 way there, I can see the console output from the i2000, however, I cannot seem to provide any input.

I'm not sure if I have a null modem cable which I think I need?

I'm also not sure if the i2000 is accepting input, that's part of what this is about.

I couldn't find anything in it searches related to: KBRC00005801 or "Access Port". Might that help my input problem or is that for making the whole remote access thing simpler once I get it working?

Thanks very much!

Re: Cannot connect to serial port terminal

I was able to view ths doc from your URL. Any idea why the search didn't find it? Let me know how I cold search the IT site to find this.

This doc didn't seem relevant to serial port access. It seemd to have only to do with modems. Let me know if I missed any important parts of the modem discussion that apply to straight serial port connections.

Re: Cannot connect to serial port terminal

I'm not sure what is going on with searches today, I have hard copies of a few docs and I could not find them doing a doc id search or an exact phrase match of its title. Anyway, the importance of the document is not the modem part but the access port section. A modem also uses the cu command you want to use. You may be able to extrapolate some information from a different serial port use to satisfy your needs.
