Choice of the type of installation

My company bought 140 machines HP B2600 9000/785 to replace old machines functioning under HP UX 9.07.

All the machines must have HP UX 11 and Openview.

The problem is that:
some machines are used as server and must have the software :
- INGRES
- FTAM
- OTS

Other machines are used as clients and must have the software :
- X25
- UPS
...

In all, there are 5 different types of operation.

The machines are not connected in network, I must thus install them starting from a tape DAT.

My goal is to create only one band DAT which will make it possible to a user to install the machines according to the desired type.

1 - How to make to create only one Ignite-ux image and which makes it possible to select the type of machine that one wants to install ?

2 - The use of Ignite-ux SERVER would make it work easier?

3 - How to make to force the partitioning of the hard disk of the target machine?

Use an Ignite tape and have a copy or more and start installing...

2 - The use of Ignite-ux SERVER would make it work easier?

Yes easier, but you said the servers are not networked. Connect them to the netork and use the Ignite server.

3 - How to make to force the partitioning of the hard disk of the target machine?

Choose advanced install so you can modify the LVM latout including the filesystem sizes.

Re: Choice of the type of installation

Hi,

I strongly suggest you follow standards while setting up your workstations. Future maintenance will be easy. They include standard volume group, file system names, instance numbers, io slots, hostnames etc.,

All the above is possible if you use an Ignite server. You will need to have all the systems connected in the network preferably in the same subnet.

This is the high level schema that I would follow

1. Setup an Ignite server.
2. Install one system using CDs. Install other softwares like perfview, Programming languages etc., drivers. Patch it with the recent best patch bundles.
3. Using ignite server create a Golden image of this system.
4. Then you can customize ignite server to include kernel parameters and other softwares.
5. You can boot the systems through ignite server and use Ignite server's GUI to load the golden image + the customized software.

You can install multiple systems in one shot. You have to put them in the network anyway, then why cannot now?.

If you have no choice, then I will suggest you to install two systems as in step 2. Install INGRES, FTAM and OTS on one system and X25 and UPS on the other. Take multiple copies of make_tape_recoveries of both the systems and install the other systems.

So with the above the answers are

1. No. With make_tape_recovery it is not possible.
2. Yes. Ignite Server can make your work easier. And you can install the servers of the type you wanted. You will need extra reading and understanding of Ignite-UX.
3. By default 10.20 onwards will make the boot disk as LVM. While installing the system you can configure the partitions (logical columes). If you use make_tape_recovery with -i option, it will put you into interactive mode during the installation.

Another vote here at 3:12 a.m. Central for networking and Ignite server.

You can create different images for different machines. If the Ignite server is 11.11 it can serve images for 11.00 and 10.20 boxes.

As far as tape goes, DAT is going out as a standard.

We went out and put my server upgrade project $15,000 over budget to adhere to our standard which is 200 G Ultrium drives.

But they can recover a box a hell of a lot faster than DAT. I've done it both ways.

Why 3:12 a.m. Long story.

You gotta have good, fast tape drives for emergency reocvery and for makeing tapes to take off site, and I am now an Ultrium fan, even at 5 grand a drive.

Why 3:12 a.m. Long story.
