Cloning rp7410 to rp4440 ?

Hello HP,

I need to upgrade my current rp7410 to our new rp4440. Can I use ignite for cloning ? I'm concerned about the different architechture ?

****************************************
"make_tape_recovery -IAv":

Per man page:
-I Causes the system recovery process to be interactive when
booting from the tape. By default, when the systems boots
from the recovery tape, it will allow ten (10) seconds to
interrupt the automatic recovery process in order to make
modifications interactively. When the -I option is
specified, booting from the tape will always present the
interactive menus. This option is useful when making
configuration changes during the recovery, and may also help
prevent an accidental system recovery from a recovery tape

rp7410:
B.11.11 U 9000/800/rp7410

rp4440:

Re: Cloning rp7410 to rp4440 ?

It might work. The rp7410 and rp4440 might be "close enough" in hardware to work. I'd say give it a shot and if it works great, if not, you haven't really lost anything but time.

One thing that may help is to make sure you are up to date on patches, specifically the Hardware Enablement patch bundle. Load it on the rp7410 before you create your tape, if possible.

Re: Cloning rp7410 to rp4440 ?

Hi,

I know people that cloning servers between rp-class. I don't think there are differencies on hardware platforms but it should work.
I heard many people that did that before but cannot find official documentation about that.

Good luck.

Best regards,
Fabio

Re: Cloning rp7410 to rp4440 ?

The farthest I've pushed this personally is rp5450 to rp5470.

That worked with an extra boot to deal with the hardware differences.

You might find its easier to go the Golden Image route, which reduces the hardware dependencies. Golden Images works better for software images.

I've replicated systems including Oracle DB/App server setups, so long as the database is down when the Golden image is made.

Re: Cloning rp7410 to rp4440 ?

Hi Jerry,

Ensure the following
a. Install latest Ignite Client on RP7410 before taking ignite backup
Use the following option while taking backup make_tape_recovery -IAv

b. While restoration on the advanced menu choose "Clone to Different Hardware", so that it will create a new kernel with required drivers to boot after ignite restore

Thanks

Re: Cloning rp7410 to rp4440 ?

U can use the above mentioned command there is no problem with this command ,

make_tape_recovery -iAv , when u boot your new system with this tape then u can change the size of your os Partition also ( if required ) , Once your new system boots it runs insf -e automatically , to built new device driver files , in that case if there is any hardware change in systems then also u will not face any problem.

JUST MAKE SURE TO CALCULATE YOUR SWAP SPACE PROPERLY AS PER YOUR HARDWARE, IF BOTH SERVERS ARE HAVING THE SAME RAM & HARD DISK SIZE THEN NO PROBLEM . GO AHEAD & ENJOY

I would be interested in knowing if you are successful with this. You are moving from a cell based architecture to a non-cell based architecture.

I am sure it works.
I had done with rp5470 and recover to rp4440.

Re: Cloning rp7410 to rp4440 ?

It depends on the patch level of your clone host.
rp4440 has PA-8800 CPU's.
rp7410 has PA-8700 CPU's.
Maybe some adapter cards are differnet too
e.g. the SCSI controler with the vg00 disks.

You need to install all device drivers and patches for rp4440 on the rp7410 and clone it...
Try it. Maybe it works, maybe not :-)

My 2 cents,
Armin

Re: Cloning rp7410 to rp4440 ?

I just had my power installed for the new rp4440. I'm booting off the ignite tape
( made with make_tape_recovery -IAv )

I will be sure to select :
the advanced menu choose "Clone to Different Hardware", so that it will create a new kernel with required drivers to boot after ignite restore

Re: Cloning rp7410 to rp4440 ?

It should work.

I have my golden image created on a SuperDome nPar (PA8800 based even). I use the same Golden Image on machines on older N4000's.

I even managed to install that Golden Image on a D220 - albeit 32bit!

Re: Cloning rp7410 to rp4440 ?

Your 7410 probably has DDS-3 whilst yor rp440 has DDS-4 (or DAT72). Normally that should not pose any problem.

DO you have any other Ignite Tape Media that you can try? Or simply try repeating it.

Also, how a bout taking a make_net_recovery archive
