DLT No such device or address

Hi All,

I had a problem with using a DLT on a HP-PB card so I moved it onto a HSC card (As recommended previously in this forum).

I can see the hardware when I do a ioscan -fnC tape. Shows output
Class I H/W Path Driver S/W State H/W Type Description
======================================================================
tape 3 8/12.3.0 stape CLAIMED DEVICE QUANTUM DLT8000
/dev/rmt/5m /dev/rmt/c1t3d0BEST
/dev/rmt/5mb /dev/rmt/c1t3d0BESTb
/dev/rmt/5mn /dev/rmt/c1t3d0BESTn
/dev/rmt/5mnb /dev/rmt/c1t3d0BESTnb

I am trying to write to /dev/rmt/5m but get an error. e.g. dd if=/dev/rmt/5m of=/tmp/dd.out
/dev/rmt/5m: No such device or address
dd: cannot open /dev/rmt/5m

Any Ideas why I cannot read/write to this?

By the way I am using HPUX 11.00 on a K370 and the DLT is a Quantum 8000.

Thanks for any help,

Colin.

Re: DLT No such device or address

Your DLT8000 looks like its setup and connected fine.

Your example you said you tried to write to it but your dd command was trying to read from it ? (dd if=/dev/rmt/5m).

Have you tried writing to it first, as if you use a tape which has been initialized on say a DLT4000 first then your DLT8000 may have trouble reading it. So, try a new tape and writing to it first.

Re: DLT No such device or address

1- When you load tape, it take several seconds until it is ready.

The typical message if you try to read/write is No such device or address

2- If you try to write an tape is protected the mesages is the same.
