Errors backing up to LTO

Hi,

I've just setup a 11i system (RP5430). I've installed all the software I need, and am trying to take a "baseline" backup of the system. It's connected (via SCSI) to a HP Ultrium drive, and that drive is showing up in SAM.

I'm using the backup manager in SAM to select all local file systems.

I've checked the SCSI cable is connected to the appropriate drive, and is properly terminated.

The drive shows up in ioscan -C tape

All I get is an IO error. How can I diagnose this problem?

Here is the output of fbackup

Re: Errors backing up to LTO

Check the device status with
mt -t /dev/rmt/0m status

What does it say...can you use another backup tool to check if the drive works properly ???

Try tar or dd...

Re: Errors backing up to LTO

Clean the drive, replace the tape. If you have no activity light flashing try replacing the tape drive (last resort). I am also fairly sure you should be able to use mt -t fsf 1 /dev/xxxx to move tape 1 space.
If it works - - Dont' Fix It !!!

Re: Errors backing up to LTO

as said :
ioscan -fnC tape

to check if you have device files. If not do:

insf -e

If you have devicefiles they may be corupted, I would remove them:

rmsf -H 0/0/10/0/0.3.0

then do an ioscan to check the status and then :

insf -e

ioscan to check the status, then trye to do the backup again.

Another thing check that the tape is not write protected.

Re: Errors backing up to LTO

Hi, thanks for the replies

Daniel - I cleaned the drive, but same error occurred.

No status light flashing - could this be hardware error? STM says file checks out good.

orange - i'll try that.

STM output

Re: Errors backing up to LTO

trye to take out the SCSI connector and the terminator and look if anything is bended. Reconnect it carefuly.

Sorry - I checked the pins and the connectors on the cable and the terminator.

Fast running out of ideas. Any thoughts?

Re: Errors backing up to LTO

I remove the drive from it's bay in the tape array, and re-seated it. I can now rewind a tape, but when I did an fbackup from SAM, the backup froze on file 598

598: /etc/asx/eus/fs_config 1
fbackup(3027): ioctl error, can't query outfile
at media record 59
fbackup(3102): attempting to make this volume salvagable
fbackup(3123): could not read the previous checkpoint record
fbackup(3105): writing 2 EOFs and rewinding the tape
fbackup(3106): please mount a good tape
fbackup(3040): output file /dev/rmt/c0t4d0BEST encountered an I/O error
fbackup(3019): would you like to enter a new output file?
