Exchange 2000 Virtual Server 2 NIC Subnet

Hello,

I know MS Windows issue should not be posted here, but since I have got a lot of decent help from networking group, I am attempted to have comment again.

I would like to know if anyone have idea about the 2 network card subnet on Exchange Server Virtual Server setup. The whole idea is:

NIC2: receive Internet mail frm Internet and get them to client in LAN, and send mail within LAN;
NIC1: receive sendmail request from NIC2 and send them to Internet.

This configuration does not use forwarding, but some sore of mail-gateway, I guess.

Question: how do we assign the IPs? Do they have to be in different subnet? Would same subnet be OK? I used to have problem on subneting, when different subnetted guys failed to received email.

Please help, and thanks a lot.

Re: Exchange 2000 Virtual Server 2 NIC Subnet

Use different subnets. Also be sure to only put in the default gateway on the NIC going to the internet. If you have other subnets you need to reach via the other NIC then use
route add a.b.c.0 mask 255.255.255.0 ipofnexthop -p

for each network. Where a.b.c.0 is the address of your distant network ipofnexthop is the gateway IP. You may need to adjust the mask and the number of zeroes in the network address for your network.

Make sure that everyone on the subnets that are not directly connected has a route back to your subnet or that their default gateway knows how to get to you.

Steven,

It's nice to see that you're getting the idea of assigning points. Keep up the good work, but try to grade the answers a little more.

Best of luck,
Pete
