I plan to extend a / (root) file system. The client says it filled up a month ago and now he needs to install something on the system. I have checked the root volume for any unnecessary files but can't seem to find any.
Here is what I plan to do. Tell me whether I'm on course. Also, I have attached output from vgdisplay -v
1) Take an ignite backup:
#make_tape_recovery -v -x inc_entire=vg00
2) Boot the system and interrupt it before it boots from the normal internal disk then make it to boot from the tape.
Now, from here I will need to follow what options I will get since I haven't done it before and don't have a test environment to try out first :-)
Kindly assist.
Regards,
Rianui

Re: Extending root VG from Ignite backup
Generally things are installed in /opt, sometimes in /usr (/usr/local, for example) - but in either case, there should be no extra space consumed in the root file system (/). What is it that they are installing?

Re: Extending root VG from Ignite backup
There is also about 90GB of free space in the root disk why not create another volume, mount it under / and install the new software?

Re: Extending root VG from Ignite backup
As said above / filesystem is static one and should not consume this much space. You need to find the files/dir which consumes space and move/delete.
If you still want to extend by ignite backup,
select the interactive installation option when it boot from the ignite tape, modify the LV size and continue to install. It is not much difficult.

Re: Extending root VG from Ignite backup
Before I go to the point of extending / you might look under /dev for bogus files. I generally find where someone was trying to write to a tape but wrote it to a file, so check /dev/rmt/ for file(s) like that.
Next check things under /etc, like how many .bak files of things like host,lvmtab,group,...etc. are there and clean up the all but current & 1 backup.
But here are some old "notes" I have that might help you....
Rgrds,
Rita

Re: Extending root VG from Ignite backup
I noticed the root volume is mirrored. Maybe split it before re-sizing / with Ignite.
Then when you're system is rebuilt and working you can re-mirror VG00.
Also a good tape backup would be good.
Cheers

Re: Extending root VG from Ignite backup
Compare outputs of bdf / and a sum of du -ks for directories in the / fs. If you see a big difference in the results, i.e. bdf gives a much more number, reboot the machine. May be somebody removed a file, which was opened by a process and the process is alive.

Should be really large enough!
Check if you have files/directories in / that not belongs to vg00 (previous advises)!
Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Extending root VG from Ignite backup
Apologies for taking long to reply.
I need to point out here that I don't have much knowlegde with UX, so kindly bear with my responses.
Pete,
The client wants to install a C++ compiler.
TTr,
I don't know that for sure but have attached an out put for ls -lrt
If possible I would like to avoid going the ignite way.
Thank you all for your time.
Regards,
Rianui

Re: Extending root VG from Ignite backup
In any case, post the output from "bdf -l" and let's take a look at exactly what is going on. It sounds like we have two separate issues here. One, we need to install some software - that should be simple to do. Two, we may have a full / file system - that should be easily correctable.

Re: Extending root VG from Ignite backup
This is likely too large.
Check for a "wrong" misspelled tape backup, e.g.
/dev/rmt/om
or something.
Do
# ll /dev/rmt
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Extending root VG from Ignite backup
You can also look at /dev with the find command: find /dev -type f. This will show you all the regular file in /dev - there should not be any.

Thanks so much. I have deleted the wrong entry. Attached now is the corrected output.
Again, thanks.
Pete,
Rita had it right the fist time :-)
I guess I just needed more details on what to do.
Thanks guys!!

The file 'om" as noted is your culprit. The key is that it is a *regular* file and not a character or block device. Do a 'man ls' for more details.
