Generating pdf files on HP9000

Hi gang

Do you know of a cheap way of generating pdf files on an HP9000?

One of our clients-to-be [hopefully] just asked...
"We've got an HP9000 server which does all sorts of MRP and accounting stuff

We use a forms-based programme that merges data onto HP printers as 'forms' output

However we can't capture the finished version to a PC without printing it out and scanning it back in - which is a pain

I thought we might be able to put a pdf printer driver on the HP and print to that

The only one our US troops can find costs $1,500 which is expensive"

All ideas gratefully accepted :-)
[given that I'm completely out of my depth - again]

Kind regards
Mike

Hi Mike,

May be are start points..

If you can get a driver for a ps compatible printer, then you can use acrobat reader or ghostscript to convert from ps to pdf and vice-versa.

Re: Generating pdf files on HP9000

You could also "print" to a ps printer and modify its script so that it gets the file from its spool dir and converts it to pdf with the ps2pdf command that comes with gnu ghostscript.

Two things: you'll need ghostscript (of course) and the generated pdfs will most likely be bigger than those created with acrobat, especially if they contain a lot of graphics.

Also, you may want to use a "very standard" ps printer driver (i'd say a lj4, maybe with colors) or you could get in troubles with ghostscript.

That program will do the job.

You'll also have some fun with PCL escape codes in your print spooler. I didn't get to learn that last time around, that was back when I was so busy they hired a consultant to handle this and a print driver script.

I hate printers.

Re: Generating pdf files on HP9000

Mike,

Why not go with Acrobat itself:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

There's a version for HP-UX available there. According to the Adobe website, it will " Easily convert virtually any document to a
reliable Adobe PDF file "
