getpid : peer died

Hello!

Somebody know what this error message means?

telnetd[23323]: getpid : peer died: Error 0

It could be caused by a number of things. Usually I have found this is a problem with resolution. Do a nslookup on and another nslookup for . See if you get the same. If not, then DNS resolution is your problem....if you need to go farther take a look at this thread:

It means that whatever client was telnetting into your server died without letting the server know.

Hi,
If you enable connection logging with inetd, e.g. inetd -l, then you will see the connection source logged into syslog just before the telnetd getpid peer died message. Trace this back and talk to whomever has that PC to find out what they are doing.
My experience has found that this is caused by a PC monitoring package called "whatsup".
