HELP UNIX Formatted floppies

Is there anyone who can tell me how I can get a UNIX (I believe it was AIX or IRIX) formatted floppy to read in a windows XP or 2000 workstation? I need to get these files onto the network so I can transfer and read them on my C160 WS, it came with a tape drive and not a floppy. Is there an emulator that would do this, or do I have to buy a floppy drive for the C160? If I have to buy a floppy, would any windows floppy drive work or does it have to be a UNIX floppy drive? Thanks in advance.

Hello Lewis,

You can use RawWrite, http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/rawwrite.htm, on your PC to make an iso file of the floppy and then ftp it to your C160. From there I believe you can mount the iso file via a loopback. I'm sorry but I don't know the details. I've done it a time or two on linux, but never on hpux.

Thanks, I'll look into it, but I would like more details if anyone has ever had to do this.

Re: HELP UNIX Formatted floppies

Unfortunately this program still does not work, win2000 still asks me if i want to format the disc even when I choose the a: drive on the machine from within the read portion of the program. That would be a disaster.

Re: HELP UNIX Formatted floppies

Lewis,

I've been looking around and I don't think HPUX has a loopback driver, so even if you can get an ISO file from floppy, you'd have to use a linux box to mount it. The only other program that I can think of is winimage. http://www.winimage.com/winimage.htm

Be sure to write protect the floppy.

Good luck,
Tom

Still no luck, windows just refuses to recognize the file(s) on the disc. It just keeps asking to reformat the disc. Thanks anyway.

Re: HELP UNIX Formatted floppies

Since nothing has solved this, I'll chime in with my $.02:

- possibly Cygwin utilities (www.cygwin.org) might read the floppy, but I haven't done this
- possibly you could just download Linux, install on a spare machine, and perhaps then you could get Tom's method to work (hi, Tom, you're correct about your hunch :)
- is there any possible way you could get it sent to you in a different medium?
- possibly there's someone else at work/in your geographical area who could read the floppy for you and give it to you on tape/mail/FTP

There's always a way.

Best,
Mic

Take a look here ;

http://www.unixguide.net/hp/faq/5.8.2.shtml

The dosif commands are very slow; a faster alternative that can handle
long filenames and also works with ZIP drives and similar devices is
the free Mtools package, available from the HP-UX Porting and Archive
Center and http://www.artwork.com/eesof/mtools/download.htm

Hope this helps,
