Solution
There is no standardized way to do that.
You must read the documentation that came with the software (and/or the on-line help, if there is one).
You may find:
- the actual license document (as a paper document, or as an electronic document)
- that the possession of a legitimate installation media is considered a license to use the software (usually, in one computer at a time only)
- that the license to use the software is tied to some piece of hardware (HP-UX workstation licenses are/used to be like this: if you own the hardware, you are entitled to use the software)
- that the program uses some sort of a license code, which must be input or the program won't install (the HP-UX Application CDs are partly like this: some software on them is free, for others you need a Customer ID and a Codeword, specific for that particular CD release)
- that the program uses some sort of a centralized license management system, which usually means the licenses are managed using some sort of a license server program.
- or that the program uses some other scheme, tailored to that program and its intended use.
