HP CIFS Server

Has anyone ever used the HP CIFS Server?? How does it compare to Samba (i did see that it was based on samba, but am i able to move my old samba config files to the new box) Also -- what is the benifit of using this depot rather than the depot that is offered at samba.org? Finally, any comments like "I like it but... " are greatly appreciated. Points to all that help.

Thanks in Advance,
Adam

Re: HP CIFS Server

Shalom Adam,

HP CIFS server is Samba. Samba is CIFS. The same product, two different names.

The benefit of using the depot is that HP actually tested it on HP-UX and its very likely to work right. HP might even support it under your software contract.

Using the depot makes it easy to inventory your depot software using the various sd/ux commands.

I have used CIFS for years in many applications, and we use it widely where I work now. I have two HP-9000 servers in my apartment providing disk space to a the other lesser computers in my apartment. I've never had a problem except when Israel Electric turned off the power for an hour once.

Re: HP CIFS Server

Yes - I use both samba and CIFS - samba on linux - but HP-UX CIFS server on HP-UX.

Main reason - HP supports their CIFS Server product. It is really Samba - but a "canned" version - tested by them.

The only thing about the HP depots - is sometimes it takes a bit before they catch up to the current version...IE - current version of samba is 3.0.21a (released Dec 30 2005) - and current version at HP - 3.0.14a.

To me - I'd rather wait until HP tests it before going to the latest and greatest...especialy in a production environment...

Re: HP CIFS Server

Thanks to both of you -- your replies were exactly what I needed to hear so that I could start our next migration from tru64/samba to HP-UX/CIFS

thanks again,
