HPUX 11.i or 11.11

Has anyone started a discussion of the problems with HPux 11.i?
Some items for discussion could be:
Forced installation of web server type applications.
Lose of data base server tuned parameter sets.
Lack of applications for 11.i, ie AFS.
Benefits of upgrading from 11.00 to 11.11 if any.
Thanks for any discussion.

Re: HPUX 11.i or 11.11

Hi,

I'll preface this by saying that I have not seriously examined 11i yet nor do I have production systems. (I teach HP's sys. adm. classes.)

What HP is emphasizing in their classes is the Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) and dynamically tunable kernel parameters. I'm not sure if this is enough to make me want to rush right out and upgrade but these are nice features especially in HA shops.

Re: HPUX 11.i or 11.11

The question is, "Why has HP dropped the tuned parameter set for OLTP database machines instead of updating it for new dynamically tunable kernel paramenters?"
Also why does HP strongly recommend that you take a complete OE set and not add or delete from it. I don't need disk mirroring on all of my machines, but I would like it on some of them. Also, by forcing me to install the various webserver type applications, when they are not needed for a database server machine, HP is giving hackers more things to attack.
That's why I was wondering if anyone who was responsible for database server machines and was concerned about security, had upgraded to HPux 11.11.

Re: HPUX 11.i or 11.11

The OBAM software is configurable.
The Web server can be easily stopped.
It is not configured by default.

Mirror disk is only an extremely small addidion to lvm, in terms of size.. again it's use is optional

VxVM is a larger system addition and is optional also.

The main addition is Kernel tuning, Dlkm, smaller footprints, Online Addition/ Replacement and Deletion of IO cards.

The bundles are there to ease licencing issues.
One licence rather than numerous. I think it make sense.

Again, upgradeability to ia64, binary compatability between ia64 and HPUX11i,

The list is nearly endless.. but you're right, it may be a little too early to upgrade to 11i.. give it some time to mature.

See www.hp.com/go/hpux11 for more information.

Re: HPUX 11.i or 11.11

Ray - what do you mean by "forcing me to install the various webserver type applications". Weve installed 11.11 and it doesnt do that all. From the basic install from the CD we have installed;

BUNDLE11i B.11.11.0102.2 Required Patch Bundle for HP-UX 11i, February 2001
CDE-English B.11.11 English CDE Environment
FDDI-00 B.11.11.01 PCI FDDI;Supptd HW=A3739A/A3739B;SW=J3626AA
GigEther-00 B.11.11.14 PCI/HSC GigEther;Supptd HW=A4926A/A4929A/A4924A/A4925A;SW=J1642AA
HPUX11i-OE B.11.11 HP-UX Internet Operating Environment Component
HPUXBase32 B.11.11 HP-UX 32-bit Base OS
HPUXBaseAux B.11.11 HP-UX Base OS Auxiliary
OnlineDiag B.11.11.00.04 HPUX 11.11 Support Tools Bundle

No web stuff there. We dont want the GigEther and FDDI stuff but its easily removed. Weve had no problems at all with 11.11 so far, in fact it looks nice and fast compared to 11.0.
Im from Palmerston North, New Zealand, but somehow ended up in London...

Re: HPUX 11.i or 11.11

Bill,
One license would be fine, if it didn't mean paying for software that you didn't need/want.
I'm in the process of finding out how much of a price increase 11.i will mean.

Stefan,
Look at your "HPUX11i-OE B.11.11 HP-UX Internet Operating Environment Component", it contains Apache Web Server, CIFS, Java 2, and Netscape. None of these are needed for a Oracle database server machine.
