Identifying lan

I have an Itenium machine with 3 NICS. I have an DNS entry but cannot seem to bring it up on the network. What's the quickest way to identify which lan the CATV cable is plugged into, other than trying them all in sequence?
Thus far I tried lan0 and lan2 without success.

Re: Identifying lan

Try linkloop?

Go on another server and try the MACs

linkloop -i 0 0x001279436303

Re: Identifying lan

If you know your system, you know the relationship between the hardware path and the physical location.
Try to find it out by using

olrad -q
or
rad -q
or review your systems documentation or just tell us the model name.

I assume you know the card where the cable is plugged into, but you don't know which lanx is it, right?

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Identifying lan

correction assumption. I am not sure how to correlate where it's plugged into with which lanx it is.

Re: Identifying lan

I'm not totally sure, but this looks like a rx4640. if this is true, then

0/1/2/0 +
0/1/2/1 slot 2

0/3/1/0 slot 3

0/4/1 ... 4 port card in slot 5
0/4/1/0/4/0 port A
0/4/1/0/4/1 port B
and so on

I guess this is all you need to know to configure your network.

Hope this helps!

Re: Identifying lan

I saw your reply after I posted my reply, but this confirms my assumption. The slot number is printed on the back and is counted from left to right.

slot 1 and 2 are not printed in this output, because they are not hot-plugable.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Identifying lan

Yes, I forgot to say it is in fact rx4640.

Re: Identifying lan

Question answered?

Now imagine this on a superdome with 192 PCI cards ;-)

But the way to find it out is almost the same ...

Have fun!

Hope this helps!

Re: Identifying lan

Yes, it did, thank you.

olrad -q

is the crux of the matter, and from its output you can correlate HW address with the output from ioscan or lanscan and it makes it real easy.

Re: Identifying lan

I just found another document, not exactly related to your question, but interesting too.

Perhaps you decide now to install your card from slot 5 to 7 or 8 for better performance.
