I'm a total newbie at using Ignite. Is it possible to use Ignite to copy a disk (without Ignite on it) to another disk on the same machine by using Ignite on another machine that is connected by a LAN?

Several comments, here:
If you aren't aware of the Ignite documention URL, start with:
http://www.software.hp.com/products/IUX/docs.html#admin_guide
Ignite is intended to deal with the root disk. It's not a generalized backup or replication mechanism for disks other than the root structures.
The MirrorDisk/UX product implements mirroring and the ability to split and remerge (resynchronize) copies of data. The System Administration Tasks manual discusses this topic very well. An online version can be viewed from:

An excellent thread on copying disks, with dd, is this one:
